Description: (RUNDLES IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE SEASON.) "On the bank of the River Avon, Rundles is an idyllic spot for pre-theatre dining in Stratford. The room, all grey cement and pale wood, feels like a Mies van der Rohe-designed spa. Chef Neil Baxter, who's been head chef since 1981, has a flair for the dramatic, in a good way. The tender poached lobster with salmon roe, cubed cucumber, yuzu jelly and dill oil sparkles like a mosaic of multicoloured sea glass and tastes bright and clean. Flawless panfried rib-eye showcases classic training and finesse. At the end of the meal, the server suggests "the famous lemon tart." The bruleed concoction, studded with toasted pistachios and sided with smooth orange sorbet, lives up to its recommendation." (Toronto Life) Pre-theatre seating times: 5, 5:15, 5:30, 5:45, or 6 pm. Late dinner seating available. Closed: Monday.

Great food with a very inventive menu, it is a pre fix pricing, but timing off to get to the theater without rushing and it is really expensive

“Wanted to love it, only able to like it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

I really wanted to love Rundles. Partly because of its repuation and partly because of the cost, which with the prix fixe meal, two 1/4 litres of house wine, tip and taxes, was near $300. We were in town celebrating a milestone anniversary, so I was prepared to pay big for a great meal, and I had high expectations based on the other glowing reviews on this site; perhaps a bit too high.

The food was good, aspects of it were very good. Mains could have been a bit larger, guessing the rib eye steak amounted to only 3 ounces. The service was pleasant, although a bit obtrusive, possibly as there was only one other couple dining at the same time, so she had only two tables. The view was nice, and seating comfortable, but the interior is a bit tired and in need of being refreshed. They have a very extensive wine list, up to a Chateau Latour for $500+. I enjoyed a pleasant Chilean Pinot Noir.

All in all, while everything was pleasant, and I do recommend Rundles, I feel that the value is slightly off. Perhaps that's why there was only one other couple dining that evening. That said, the face of the 2014 Stratford Festival came in to eat while we were there, so I suppose that says something.

Thank you for visiting our establishment in 2014. Yet, we are sorry to have read that you did not appreciate your Rundles dining experience. Naturally, we are fully aware that what we offer will not appeal to all. We attract loyal supporters, and detractors alike.

Thus, we hope that if/when you return, we will earn a better review from you. If you would like to correspond directly with us, we encourage you to send an email or letter by mail, and we will reply in a timely manner.

“Fascinating!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

First of all, Rundles had a spot for us when everyone else in Stratford was booked solid - one tends to think more favourably of a restaurant when they are helpful like that, and we were not to be disappointed. Secondly, the approach through a lovely small garden with pond to an unusual building that make good use of vertical rather than horizontal space was impressive. Thirdly, although we couldn't see much of the River Avon, there was an attractive garden nearby on the level where our table was situated between the Rundles building and its neighbour which more than compensated for not being able to see the swans on the river. The service was first-rate, the food on the prix fixe menu was very good, and the wait staff made sure we were finished with our meal in time to get to a theatre performance that evening. What more could anyone ask for? We certainly will plan to dine (and make a reservation next time) at Rundles on our next trip to Stratford.

“Favourite visit of at least twenty Rundles experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2014

My husband and I have been to Rundles at least twenty times and our last visit was my favourite! The food was perfect, the service amazing and the company made the night! One of my favourite things was when the chefs from the kitchen brought the tray of food to our server so I got to say hi to Nick, Sherri and Randi - thanking them personally for the amazing food! Seeing Neil on our way out topped it off. Rob had a great conversation with James and Richard! Thanks Cathy for the flawless service!
Thanks!!!!

This is an exceptionally beautiful restaurant which looks across a park at the River Avon. They have a prix fixe menu and the food is wonderful.
