“Great comfortable feeling”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

What a great comfortable accommodation! Lots of coffee and tea are available. And even bottled water in the fridge and cookies for a snack. Videos and books are in the room if required. The windows open and a fire place gives some ambience. A great stay and right downtown Stratford for shopping and close for a walk to the shows. Our third time staying at the Mercer Inn.

Room Tip: All rooms have a room. Stairs not a problem if fit.

We recently stayed at the Mercer Hall Inn for our 10th anniversary. Stratford is such a beautiful city. We were thrilled to be staying in this wonderful Inn, right in the midst of all the action, near all the fun stores, and in walking distance to the theatre.

The room was really nice, comfortable, and had its own distinct charm, which set it apart from your basic chain hotel. Our room had a selection of books by Canadian authors, cd's by Canadian artists, and Canadian art as well.

The lady who checked us in was absolutely lovely: kind and personable. When we arrived there were two really good chocolate chip cookies waiting for us in our room. It was a really, really nice trip. What a wonderful place to stay--much, much better than the "Festival Inn." We're so glad we found the Mercer Hall Inn.

Room Tip: be forewarned that because this Inn is right in the "heart" of the action, it will be nois...

We stayed at this hotel for the second time, as we had been so pleased the first time. We found our room to be large, well-decorated and clean. We were in #207, which is at the back, so gives a really quiet sleep. which is a big plus for light sleepers like us. Yes, there are quite a few stairs, as this is a historical building, but we didn't find it a problem, as we are quite nimble. However, that fact does mean we have to rate it as very good, rather than excellent. The parking is right behind the hotel in a well-lit lot, and the room key lets you in through the back entrance. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and pleasant. We stopped in the restaurant after dinner to get a coffee to take to our room while changing for dinner, and the staff said they would bring it to us. They brought it within 5 minutes, and wouldn't accept payment or a tip. We had a jacuzzi suite, and the jacuzzi didn't want to cooperate. However, the management resolved our problem to our satisfaction, and we will definitely stay here again next year. The atmosphere, staff and location make this an ideal spot to stay, so long as you have no mobility problems. We had lunch in the restaurant, and it was delicious and satisfying. They have gluten-free options, which is a big plus for us.

The “yay”: Great location, right in the heart of the city, walk or bike everywhere, including Festival theatre, as long as you’re not wearing dress heels. Free reserved parking right behind the building. Friendly, helpful staff. Shabby chic but clean. Nice little touches- robes, a voucher for a chocolate treat down the street; bottled water and cookies in the room upon arrival, along with a selection of teas. You can tell Mercer is making a real effort to be a premier boutique property.

The “meh”: We stayed in jacuzzi/fireplace suite 207, which offers a view of a wall and parking lot. At least you can keep an eye on your car. The suite appears spacious but is oddly shaped and if you spend too much time in it you’ll long for a table, a comfortable chair, and a closet (there is an armoire which was too short to fit my husband’s suit or my dresses, but having seen most folk’s attire even for the evening shows I guess this isn’t a concern). We were warned about the stairs, and figured what’s two flights? The restaurant is on the ground level, and the rooms begin on the “first” floor, so actually our “second” floor room was on the third floor. Pack light. The parking lot door is also a service entrance, and while closer to our room it felt weird at times interrupting a private confab between the restaurant’s workers. We were given vouchers for lunch or dinner which we spent at Fellini's across the street. As the Detroit area is blessed with really good Italian eateries, and my spouse is first generation Italian-American, we left shaking our heads at the four star and higher raves for this restaurant. The great appetizers and wine the next evening at Mercer Hall further confirmed we’d made the wrong choice. Next year.

This was our fourth visit to the Stratford fest and we’ve stayed at a different property every time. I’ve yet to encounter four star accommodations, but Mercer comes pretty darn close, especially for a one or two night stay.

Mercer has quite large rooms (our room with the king bed was ginormous, and had a fireplace, but even the room with 2 queen beds was large), nothing super fancy but you can easily walk to all the theatres and shopping. Value for money - much cheaper than even the Best Western in town. Our only caveat - our room facing Ontario St was loud into the wee hours due to happily inebriated patrons of Bentleys, and our other room was woken by garbage pick-up slightly later but still at an unsupportable hour. Would stay again for sure, just with earplugs!

This is a great place to stay in Stratford. Located on the main street and about a 15 minute walk from the Festival Theatre or a 10 minute walk from the Avon it is well located. Our jacuzzi room was nicely appointed with a comfortable king size bed, welcome cookies, and a very spacious feel.
The only drawback is the lack of an elevator, if you have problems with stairs you may not want to stay here. We enjoyed our stay and were pleased to receive a 10% discount as repeat customers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT at the end of the hall because at the end of the hall your window view is only of...

Comfortable room, walking distance to all four Stratford Shakespeare Festival venues, close to plenty of restaurants including the one on the ground floor of the hotel. We stayed for a week and are coming back for another week in 2013.
