We stayed at Birmingham Manor for 3 nights and liked our room very much: spacious; queensize bed; private bathroom with shower - not large, but big enough; air conditioned; ceiling fan; lots of towels; bedside lights; very clean. The first night we found the room a little warm but that was because the weather had been cool, the central air had been turned off, and then the weather got hot again. No problem. We turned the ceiling fan on and opened the window. We found there was some street noise that night, not from Birmingham Street but from Eerie Street (2 over). It didn't bother me, but my husband noticed it. The 2nd night the central air was on, we kept the window closed and there was no problem.
One thing we did notice and told our innkeepers about (they asked)... was the noisy bathroom fan. They appologized, and said they knew about that and the fans were already on order. We found out as we were leaving that they are being installed next week (August 21). The one nice thing is that the fan and light are on separate switches so you don't have to have both running at the same time if you don't want.
The Innkeepers: Elena and Dom were marvelous. You would never guess they were new at this. They listened and really cared about our experience and went out of their way to be gracious and helpful (and for all the guests really, not just us). They asked about our pillows (Elena ensures that there are 'fat' pillows and 'skinny' pillows on every bed so that each guest can choose). When my husband told her he wanted 2 skinny pillows the first morning, she made sure that he had them the that night. They remembered my choice of tea in the morning and that I like boiling water poured over the tea bag, and in a pot... and that's how it came at breakfast. I am an early riser. Imagine being out on the wrap-around-veranda reading quietly, waiting for 7:30 to come around - because that's when the self-serve tea and coffee are made available... Dom arrives with a tea tray and milk no less, so I didn't have to get up!!! It was so very thoughtful. I really can't say enough good things about them.
The food was divine! 3 courses every morning served at 9:00AM: juice, water, coffee, tea, a fruit plate with yogurt, an egg dish, muffin/scone. We waddled back to our rooms... And if you can't finish or are too full for the muffin - Elena will let you brown bag it for later in the day! One morning, one guest had an egg allergy... so instead of the egg dish, we had a savoury puff pastry with carmelized onion, walnut and (maybe) mushroom filling... whatever it was, it was absolutely delicious!
We have stayed in first rate B&B's all over North America, and some that were not so first rate. We would put Birmingham Manor in the top rated category. Thank you Elena and Dom for such a wonderful stay. We'll be back!
