We just happened to cross over the bridge and noticed the sign for the Welland Canal Museum and Viewing Platform. We instantly decided to make a right turn and see what happened. Within a few minutes we were at the top of the viewing platform (free) and someone informed us that a ship would be arriving at the lock shortly. What good timing! We could see the ship in the far distance, we heard a signal blare, and we watched the roadway we had just passed over slowly ascend. The majestic ship moved forward towards us and we watched as the enormous ship filled the lock completely. The gate closed and the ship began to slowly lower in the lock. We waited and watched as the gate opened and released the ship into the water on the other side. I was mesmerized! We then went into the museum to see the scale model of the entire Welland Canal system. Absolutely worth the trip! I'm so glad that we happened upon it by accident.
