Just a great place to learn about the Welland canal and enjoy the best view. Highly recommended for both young and old. People rave about the Panama canal, they should spend some time looking at the locks on the Welland canal, just amazing.

Hubby wanted to see the Lock; I wasn't interested but went along since he always goes along with what I want to do, which has worked very well for us for 41 years :). I've got to say this was much better than I expected! We both found it very interesting to watch a huge ship go through the canal (our first time to see a Lock) and the museum is really nice - small but very worthwhile. Be sure to wear warm clothing. We thought we did, but the wind in October was really, really cold for wimpy Californians.

Stopped at the museum to watch freighters go thru the locks. We just missed two and the nice lady at the desk told us how to drive up to Lock 7 (where there is a small parking area and info center). Lock 7 was only a few minutes away and we arrived in plenty of time to watch three ships go thru. Lock 7 was a great place for photos and you could walk along the canal for a bit. The museum at Lock 3 had a small museum (free, donations excepted) with a movie about the frieghters, restrooms, viewing platform and snack bar (which wasn't open on our October visit). We enjoyed our quick visit at the museum and spent about 2 hours at Lock 7 watching the ships as a bit of excitement as two large ships approaching from different directions, and some trouble with a lock gate.

Great location that is never very busy. Lots of parking, play area for kids and of course the view of ships passing within a few feet. The museum was interesting although a little light on content. I never knew that st Catharines used to be home to the total manufacturing of REO cars by the founder of oldsmobile ... Ransom E. Olds. Nice to see an example of his work being displayed in its home town!
