Springbank House
Ranked #10 of 23 St. Catharines B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 1, 2012

A friendly, welcoming bed and breakfast in a beautiful old (early 20th century) home in an area of other beautiful old well kept homes. We enjoyed St. Catherines and the surrounding area with a group of close friends for the Niagara wine festival and other area attractions. It is conveniently located for travel to wine country, the falls, Welland Canal and Niagara on the Lake. Springbank house is just a block or two from Motebello Park, Farmers Market and other Downtown St Catherines sites making it perfect for nice walks. Our Hosts, Andrea and Stefan were accommodating and gracious sharing their hospitality and knowledge of the area with us. We had a group of four couples and used the comfortable parlor area for snacks and as a gathering place before we headed out on adventures. A wonderful time was had by all.

A fabulous stay in the off season! We so enjoyed our stay with Andrea & Stephan, who are a charming and passionate couple. The period house is charming, the breakfasts are to die for and it is perfectly situated close to fabulous restaurants in downtown St. Catherine's and all the wineries (from BeamsvIlle to Niagara on the Lake). Thank you so much for the hospitality and great conversations at breakfast; love the house!

We stayed at Springbank for the second time while exploring Niagara wine country. The proximity to this wine region is outstanding. Andrea and Stefan are consummate hosts and I wish to thank them for a wonderful long weekend. Friends of ours were with us for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed Springbank and a wonderful dinner superbly prepared
Sunday evening.

The menu:

1) Scallop Cerviche
2) Grilled Swordfish
3) Niagara Peach Gratin
4) Assorted Cheese

We planned a 5 day trip around the Greater Niagara Circle Route - a 140 km paved trail along the Niagara River and Welland Canal, from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. We took the GO Bike Train down from Toronto to St. Catharines and the cycled to Springbank, in the historic Yates heritage area.

Andrea stowed our bikes away in the garage and then we relaxed, headed out to dinner in downtown St. Catharines and slept like logs in a super-comfy bed. We really enjoyed the beautiful house and the lovely breakfast. Andrea helped us to figure out a quiet route to get to the Welland Canal trail (the B & B has wireless internet access).

Fun stuff that you definitely don't get to do in a hotel, was chatting to Andrea about her collection of signed menus, and to Stefan about his experience in the restaurant world. We can't wait to go back again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the gorgeous wisteria room

This B&B is a nice, large house with friendly innkeepers. There is a parlor and a dining room for breakfasts for common space and 4 bedrooms of various size. The house is clean and you are invited to ask for anything you need, but period fixtures and furnishings means no modern upgrades in bathrooms and no bedside table. A quiet residential street just a block away from a lovely park makes for a nice location.

Unfortunately, the severe summer like this puts pressure on an older house and, while the building in air-conditioned, it is underpowered and poorly distributed. It is therefore, difficult to set a master thermostat--one room is quite chilly while another needs a fan to get any circulation at all.

It seems to be sending mixed messages with exquisite breakfasts prepared with great skill, but no change of towels or emptying of trash cans during a stay.

Springbank House is a large Heritage property built in 1909. It is true that the A/C is not a very high efficiency system and it may not be very cold in some guestrooms We are proud that the integrity of the property was not "basterdized" by lowering the ceilings and reducing the size of the guestrooms in order to install a more savvy system.

However, we remind our guests to leave the blinds and curtains closed when they leave the guestroom so that the summer sun does not create a heating load within the guestroom.

If the bins are not 1/3 full, they are not emptied. Towels are not changed daily but are changed every 2-3 days depending on the length of the guest's stay.

We thank this guest for staying with us and look forward to welcoming her again to another room with a cooler A/C at Springbank House Inn.

My wife and I celebrated our 44th anniversary here, our first time to St.Catharines.The house was huge, elegant, and lovely;our hosts Andrea and Stefan were wonderful,as were our breakfasts. We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at a nearby restaurant, the Wellington Court,at Andrea's suggestion. Our only disappointment in this hot weather was that their lovely little swimming pool was not open to guests! We would love to go back again some day.

I just returned from 5 days in St. Catharines for a conference at Brock U. Springbank House, as others write, was a wonderful experience with warm, welcoming and helpful hosts. The house is over 100 years old in a lovely neighborhood within the heart of St. Catharines, and a 12 minute drive to the Brock campus. I stayed for 4 nights, and I felt "at home" with the comfortable bed, quiet, and beauty (nice homes, leafy trees as well as ample natural light), pleasant sitting in the common space, and of course, the delicious breakfasts. Andrea was outstanding with her responsiveness to my questions and requests for information whether it was for the best restaurants for dinner (her suggestions, La Scala, and "Rest" were superb), driving directions for best routes (Peace Bridge, what a smart choice), and my personal needs in the room (opening windows when the a/c was not on during a cooler night, so that I could enjoy fresh air, closing the blinds for me during the day, making the beds, meatless breakfast, etc.). I have to add that I felt completely secure in the room, and when I was gone, I felt completely comfortable leaving valuables there. Nothing that happens in that house would be missed by Andrea or Stefan. They have a new young Geman Shephard who "said hello" and I never saw her again--I appreciated that she was also there. More importantly, the house is in a close knit neighborhood in a quiet Canadian town. Short drive to Niagra-on-the-lake, and a great resting place. Thanks to both of the hosts for their hospitality, I had a memorable visit.
