This is by far one of the best places I have ever eaten sushi, and I've eaten at lots of different sushi restaurants across the country. There was a large selection on the menu, the service was quick, the prices were really affordable and the portions were big enough that I had left overs, and only paid about $13 for 18 pieces. Most importantly the food was DELICIOUS and fresh. I would definitely eat there again :)

We were attracted to this resto by its appealing web site, with great photography, while on a brief stop over in Sault Ste Marie. We were tired of the typical deep fried road food, and Shogun did provide a change. Restaurant choices are very limited in this neck of the woods, and its location on the main highway, amongst the usual fast food chains, placed it walking distance from our motel.

It appeared quite new and the interior was modern designer slick. Soft country music was playing in an almost empty dining room when we arrived at 8 pm on Sunday. We were greeted immediately and presented with a menu and check list for ordering. It is an all-you-can-eat/order as you go style, which seems to be becoming popular in Japanese restaurants. After some minor difficulties figuring out how to order, the food started coming to our table.

We are big fans of authentic sushi, but did not find it here. The sashimi was quite good - no worries about freshness since most fish served raw starts out frozen as required by law in Ontario (something about killing off parasites, I think). The sushi though, was really not up to snuff. The flavouring and consistency of the rice, critical to good sushi had a cloying sweetness and was missing the subtle vinegar tang.

Okay, enough of the sushi snobbery. Unlike southern Ontario, where Japanese restaurants appear on every corner and strip mall and given the location in northern Ontario and what is available, Shogun offers a refreshing change from the usual northern fare. Yes, we would return, were we in the area again. For $22 (less on weekdays) one could do quite well, but don't think of a quick meal. We were there nearly 2 hours, partly due to a lack of attention by the servers, but mostly because this style of eating tends to be nibbling on small plates while conversing and sipping sake (or Sapporo beer in our case).

About as good as you could expect from a fresh sushi restaurant this far north. Can't be easy getting really fresh fish up here on a daily basis....

What a great choice of Asian food! Pad Thai was awesome. We were expecting just sushi but the menu had all the less exotic as well. Nice and clean with good lighting. It was a bit pricey but well worth it. I will return.

The choices are excellent and all the food we had was really good.
The restaurant itself is nothing to write home about...but the food is worth it. Everything came as ordered and there was nothing we had that no one ate or liked. Great choice for Japanese food.
