Holiday Inn Peterborough

We wouldn't have stayed here, if it wasn't that all rooms in the area were booked out due to a hockey tournament in town, and that we were given a room that opened up to the promenade and river. Our room was in the basement, it was tunnel like and took us all the way back to 1972 - complete with the fire alarm ringing when we checked out. The insult was that we paid much more for this hotel, than the suite we had just come from that overlooked Niagara Falls.

We enjoyed our stay. Our room was very comfortable, would stay here again.
Front desk staff was friendly and quick with check in, wake up call was to the
minute; even though, we didn't want to get up, because our beds and pillows
were so comfortable. All was well at the Holiday Inn.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn for four days on a recent business trip to Peterborough. The location on George Street is adjacent to a small marina, with a small strip mall including a Tim Horton's immediately across the street. The location is close to the downtown, and is not too hard to find after you get off Hwy 115 and The Parkway.

The hotel is clean, and the service is very good to excellent. There is a restaurant on site that is reasonably priced and has good food. The property also has a nice three-level patio bar with food service right on the walkway along the bank of the Otonabee river. There is a nice indoor-outdoor pool with an indoor hot-tub. The fitness center is ok, with three treadmills, three bikes and three ellipticals. No free weights were available and there is no room for aerobics or yoga.

My room was on the second floor facing the river. The bed was comfortable, the linens in good condition and clean. The room had a couch, a workstation, a decent enough TV, fridge and coffee maker. The closet wasn't furnished with a door, which is ok I guess. The rooms do not have a safe, which is unfortunate and would make a good addition. The room also had a small balcony with a couple of chairs. I spent some time out there watching people strolling and fishing along the river. The river side of the hotel faces east, so you get morning sun and a chance to see some beautiful sunrises over the river if you're up that early. Like another reviewer, I found that the patio door was very worn and no longer fit the frame very well. There was a massive bolt that kept it secure from intrusions, but it wasn't a snug fit. I can easily imagine a cold winter breeze blowing in around it, and in Peterborough, -20 to -30 ºC is not unusual, so that could make the room very uncomfortable.

The bathroom could do with a thorough renovation. The counter and sink were clean and serviceable, but were looking a bit tired. The tiled tub enclosure was likewise clean and serviceable, but a bit tired.

The room had an old HVAC unit with push buttons for Heat, Cool, Fan and a red-to-blue temperature control. The unit was pretty quiet inside the room, but with the AC running it made the balcony to loud for conversation or phone use. This is another of those serviceable-but-tired things that needs to be replaced as part of a thorough renovation. An actual thermostat would be much better.

The staff was great, especially the housekeeping staff who kept my room clean and neat and provided me with some little extras like real cream for my coffee and extra coffee pouches. The front desk staff and the restaurant staff were also excellent and were very accommodating when I forgot to use some meal coupons, giving me the discount the next day without any hassle.

The Datavalet in-room Wi-Fi was flawless and easy to use. The room also had a cordless phone that was a nice touch.

Not in the top 10 hotels but when you have to stay it is ok.... sorry about the poor rating but the hotel does not meet average rating at all. Not happy about the local promotion tax added to my bill. This was never explained and I was told I had to pay it - I would like to say avoid this place but in this town your very limited on hotels. Best Western is a better pick - but I think they charge the same promo tax... Staff are first first class, hotel is in need of a remodel for sure - location is nice next to the river for a walk around - Holiday Inn should care a little more about there brand but until then this is what you can expect...

We walked in on Jan the 2nd and asked for a rate for a King Room. They had 2 kinds, 1 with a River View(no point) and the other was at the back of the hotel and considered a street view because you have a view of the roof. We decided on the second room because the rate was only $134 and it had once been used as a suite, it was really spacious. Very clean, staff was very nice and the outdoor heated pool was awesome. Try to go during the week when they are less busy. Apparently they are running short of towels in the pool area, so bring your own. No real complaints. We ended up staying 2 nights because of the peace and quiet.

The best feature about the Holiday Inn Peterborough is that it is centrally located on the edge of the downtown area.

I have stayed at this hotel a few times and the rooms are usually well maintained. This was not the case during my last stay.

The actual room was well appointed and the bed was comfortable. However, the bathroom area looked very old and did not really "fit" with the rest of the room. Also, the room has the "wet/old towel smell" which is sometimes typical of "moderately priced" accomodations.

Also, the common areas on the first floor (ie: hallways) left to be desired.

On the plus side, staff is friendly and food at the hotel restaurant is decent.

Options are somewhat limited in Peterborough so this is a fine hotel for the area and I would still recommend it for someone who need to stay in Peterborough.

Rooms on parking lot side are quite noisy (faces all night Mac's convenience store and close to downtown strip with bars and many cars dragging by and honking horns when bars let out). Rooms are fairly nice but old (bathooms in particular showing their age). Patio door in our room did not close properly and carpet by door was damp and cold....single set of doors did nothing to abate the street noise. Staff were friendly and customer oriented. Our children enjoyed the pool and games room facilities but the hottub was not working properly causing us to relocate to another hotel with a properly functioning hotub
