Ottawa-Gatineau is not blessed with a lot of really good restaurants but there are a handful and the food scene is improving at breakneck speed. In my opinion the Baxter Sreet Milestone's location is the best Ottawa restaurant in it's price range and punches well above it's weight in the overall Ottawa food scene. This Milestone's is also the best Milestone's we've been to and we've been to more than a few. I think it's remarkable that we have had dinner there so often and have never had to send a dish back to the kitchen and we have done at some of the "world's finest" places. It happens.
Day in day out the food is fresh, consistantly well-prepared, nicely presented, by friendly servers at a reasonable price. Servings are big by any standard but if weren't Class A food who would care? Milestone's all over have decent coffee now, which was a sore point for a while and I DO wish they'd use real stock and not Bovril or whatever, which would considerably elevate those sauces but that is unfortunately something most restaurants are guilty of these days. The beef in all it's presentations is good, the Prime Rib au Jus, the best I've had, the Asian Chicken bites are amazing, salads are always fresh and green; i just hate less than perfect greens and vegetables and am particularly picky about salads and I've never seen a brown, black or shrivelled piece of lettuce to leave on the side of the plate. There's a good selection of deserts but the Mexican Chocolate Cake with Chantilly cream and the softest butterscotch at just the right sweetness is magic on a plate.
Remarkably, the servers really know the food, at least at the Baxter Road location and Angie in particular is amazingly knowledgeable about the food, ingredients etc., though all the staff who've been around for a while know their stuff and they don't have a lot of staff turnover. There's a bar in there but it never gets loud so as to take away from the dining experience and they never forget they are a restaurant first and foremost. This is a very well run place.
We've been the the downtown location about ten times when going to the NAC and were usually ok but have on occasions had some not-so-good food experiences and the service is not quite as good. Having said that the downtown location is better than many places in that part of town.j
