We went out for a family celebration and we all enjoyed our meals. It wasn't very busy on a Wednesday evening, but the ambiance was very nice, the Duck was great and the service was very friendly and attentive.

Relaxed atmosphere. Friendly service. Cold beer. Easy conversations. All the ingredients. A nice place to stop for a beer with friends.

I hate writing bad reviews of places especially when located in gorgeous old historical buildings, which is the case with this very atmospheric, very well kept, very friendly and very attentive restaurant. Yes, everyone at the restaurant was wonderful including our server-personable, attentive, professional, pleasant. But the food! What an overpriced disappointment. I had the Mariposa chicken breast that was unbelievably salt. It was sitting on a bed of gnocchi and this was the selling point for me from the menu because I thought, "wow! I've never had gnocchi like this before. it'll be cool!" Instead, it had been sitting underneath a very hot chicken breast and had absorbed the roast chicken flavour. What this meant was that the gnocchi turned into little almost friend roast chicken flavored bits of gnocchi that just didn't work. My sister's arctic char tasted like glue---seriously. On a bed of quinoa? Nope. Doesn't work. Finally, we shared the creme brule duo. What a travesty. Whoever the chef was this night, this person has no idea what a creme brule is: this was actually a pudding underneath the creme brule top. Not to mention the very passable latte---what a disappointment. Even more disturbing was the fact that these entrees were top dollar and we are used to paying top dollar for good food. But, really? Oh well. We did have great company that night!

Hi Rick,

I'm sorry to hear that you feel our prices are too high. Our burgers are made from scratch in house and we try very hard to keep our menu affordable. I'm not sure where you could find the same thing for $5 in the ByWard Market but good luck. There is a McDonalds on Rideau Street if that helps.

Went to the Black Thorn after visiting the summer exhibit at the National Gallery of Canada. The Café is located in the By Ward Market in an old 1860 stone building. Lots of charm to the place with 2 terraces one in front and one in the back courtyard area. The waiter was bilingual spoke French and English well. Very good service, a nice menu, good wines. I had the Yellow Beet Salad it was excellent, we also had a Club sandwich really nice. I have been to the Black Thorn before and it is a solid restaurant/café, good value for $$.
