Domus is a great restaurant which uses very fresh, local ingredients. The menu changes regularly but remains very good and the service is attentive without being obtrusive. Their homemade bread options are great as are their desserts.

One of the people in our party remembered The Domus Cafe from when it was joined to the store beside it. We were all glad he had a good memory. The food was excellent and the service very professional. we had excellent food start to finish and all was tasty, well presented and interesting. I had the heritage tomato salad to start which was very good and then a really good roasted corn stuffed quail. I would go back in a heartbeat.

I have been going to Domus for years and always considered it one of Ottawa's top restaurants. But something was definitely missing Friday night. The room used to be packed. This night it was half empty. I noticed the prices for the main courses had dropped which was a nice surprise. We ordered the Crab Cake and Agnolotti for starters. The ingredients listed sounded like they would really make my taste buds go into overdrive. Both dishes were decent but they did not meet my expectations. They did not take off with the special flavours I expect from a top restaurant, and as everything used to taste at Domus. The same could be said for the main course I selected. Not a lot of flavour in the proscuitto wrapped Rabbit Ballotine although the accompaniments underneath were very nice. The sticky toffee dessert which the waiter told us was very popular was very sweet but again nothing special. Perhaps the chef was not looking after the kitchen this night. Perhaps he is spending more time at his other location. Has John Taylor spread himself too thin? Has Domus passed its best before date?

You won't do better in the Byward Market area of Ottawa than Domus. The welcome is warm, the room high-ceilinged but not loud, the lighting subdued but not murky, and the menu inventive.

We both had the fois gras ($18), which is tiny but delicious. One had the rabbit and found it very good, the other had two more appetizers, risotto with lobster (not discernable, sadly) and agnolotti pasta which was very tasty.

A glass of Pinot Noir from the south of France was rather different from Burgundies to the north; $17 for 9 oz.
(Rant: Why, almost 40 years after Canada adopted the metric system do restaurants still measure wine in ounces? The norm is litre, half-litre, then glass—in ounces! Would diners not know what a quarter of a litre (0.25 L) looks like? Or 0.15 L?)

The service here is especially pleasant, with an intelligent and attentive head waiter who makes the effort to ensure an agreeable meal.

Highly recommended for food quality, service, location and atmosphere.

We have never been disappointed with the delicious offerings at Domus Cafe. First you can browse the wonderful store and then you can have your tastebuds tantalized (and satisfied) in the Cafe.
