“Very nice but small”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2011

It is a nice place, rooms are very small. However, it's the parking that is very disappointing.
Space is at a premium in the garage. It should be mentioned that if you have a big vehicle or a truck, your vehicle will get scratched. It has a very low ceiling, and our truck has a big scratch on the roof now. We unfortunately will not be going back. Grace from Courtice.

This little 46 room hotel is fair and it could be really great with a little upgrading of the rooms.
Small things such as more lighting in the bathroom and bedroom, an extra waste basket (only one small one in the bathroom). Beds were comfortable and clean and the location is perfect for restaurants and the Byward market is very close by. Easy to walk to the House of Parliament.

I booked a room for three nights for a business trip because of the location. While the staff were kind and accomodating, the place is poorly maintained: pipes sticking out of walls, windows poorly installed so that cold air leaks in. No part of the building has seen a coat of paint in at least 10 years. There are no in-room sources of information - rates, check out time, emergency exits. The final straw for me was the "clean" bath towel that smelled like cooking oil.

Room Tip: Take a room on the back of the inn - which will be quieter. Rooms on the ground floor may have an e...

The location was the only plus for us;otherwise we found the room sparse (no carpet on the floor), no iron and ironing board and the light in the bathroom made it almost impossible to apply make-up and, for my husband, to shave. We had difficulty getting hand towels even after requesting them--there seemed to be a shortage. We would not stay here again.

That's the greatest asset for this hotel.

I also liked the fact that it is a family owned Inn, therefore not corporate. It is a moderate sized place, with either balconies or patios for every room. That was nice. I stayed here in June 2010 and May 2011.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. I arrived late in the evening in May 2011, and it was a hot and muggy day in Ottawa, what with me being from the West Coast. Unfortunately the room I was assigned had no air conditioner. The staff member found me a large fan, and personally cleaned it and brought it to my room. I noticed that the room was a little worn, and having stayed the year before, noticed that maintenance had taken a hit on keeping the rooms up to par. This was a slight disappointment, as the location and the quiet rooms offset this.

A two block walk to the heart of the Byward Market is perfect. I took the shuttle bus offered to the airport, but unfortunately was the first picked up, so had to make the rounds through Ottawa first. A minor inconvenience.

The hotel has basic televisions, and there is free wi-fi as well.

Overall, I recommend this hotel. You won't beat the price for location. My only suggestion is that all rooms have air-conditioning, and that they be maintained, as it's such a beautiful spot.

Room Tip: Patios on ground level. balconies above.

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of September and were very impressed. The rooms are basic but clean and we found the beds very comfortable. There was a M/wave, fridge, coffee maker, crockery and cutlery etc and the balcony was great for enjoying the warm evenings and a glass of wine. The self service breakfast was included and there were cereals, all kinds of bread, omelette, bacon, fried potatoes etc and was perfectly adequate. It was better than a European 'pension'. Location was fantastic with 96 bars and restaurants apparently within about 50 - 100 metres. You could find anything you wanted. Hop on/off bus was an experience but enjoyable. Staff at hotel were pleasant and knowledgeable and prebooked car parking, $12 a night was perfect with lift opening into reception. They had thought of lots of nice little touches, especially for a 'no frills' hotel. Complimentary afternoon tea and even umbrellas for anyone to use, should it rain. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and you would never find anything to this standard and in this location in London, UK. I would recommend this hotel to any tourist.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony ad prebook parking as it's cheaper than public carpark next door.

Mistake number one - I booked this hotel 'blind' through a discount online site - you know the one where you have to pay before they reveal the name of the hotel. If I'd seen their website or checked Trip Advisor I would never have booked it. They claimed it was a three star hotel on the same level as a Holiday Inn or a Courtyard Marriott. Well it's not! In my opinion I'd rate it a 1 star or a 'no star.' All night long we could hear drunk people out on the street. The duvet was lumpy and uncomfortable. There was no sink in the kitchenette so the only option to wash dishes was in the bathroom - yuck. The mini fridge looked like it had never been defrosted so we could make ice.The floor in the bathroom looked like it was only mopped with water - no soap. There was dust build up in all the corners and gross old linoleum tile. There was a moldy bathtub stopper by the side of the tub with a rusted out chain. I think the maids must have been cleaning around it for years because it's pretty clear there is rust and mold build up. I was gonna actually throw it in the garbage but I didn't want to touch it. The window blinds were all bent out of shape. The room looked like it had been renovated but the renovation was sloppy and unfinished. The 'free breakfast' was below par - white bread, half cooked bacon, powdered eggs, cold hash browns, processed cheese slices, iceberg lettuce, tomato and no fruit. No hot water for tea or hot chocolate even though they had tea and hot chocolate set out. Ran out of coffee on a Sunday morning! They only provide juice boxes - no jugs of juice or juice dispenser. How do you serve adults juice boxes intended for school children? The second night we barely got any sleep. We were woken by the clanking of the hotel's linen supply truck right below our window. Are room was on the 3rd floor above the lobby facing Clarence Street. Why on earth are the loading and unloading at the front door at 3 am. And even if they have too why aren't they trying to be quiet>? The hotel parking was full so we had to pay to park in a public lot close by. Their lot wasn't that far away but when we parked our car on the first night we had to witness 3 drunk guys peeing on the wall of the indoor parking lot - disgusting. This is not the hotel's fault but it gives you a feel for the area! It was terrific being so close the to Byward Market but the noise at night from club goers was pretty bad. There are no staff on duty past 10pm (they give you a code so you can buzz yourself in) so if you return to your room late at night and there's a problem there is no one you can call. On the plus side the location is pretty good, notwithstanding the night time drunks. It's a quick walk to Byward Market, Rideau Centre, Parliament Hill and museums. We will never, ever book this property again. We paid $80 per night and I felt ripped off because it was so disappointing. A Motel 6 or Super 8 would have been better.
