“Don't Skip the Peace Tower!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

Did the tour of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. Lots of folks just left after but we found the elevators, with help for the great guides and special constables, and sailed up to the top of the Peace Tower.

Great view over Ottawa and Gatineau ... .not to be missed. And if you time it right (or are lucky) lineups for the elevator aren't that bad.

Not crowded at the top when we were there. Helpful graphics to help you identify key buildings, etc. that you're looking at.

And it's FREE!

Great visit for children and adults. Fantastic view from the Peace Tower. The tour of the parliament buildings is well done. I loved the library. My grandson found it interesting and enjoyable.

“Nice view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2014

Hi,
was here and had a great time.
took a while to wait in line before i could get in, there was a tour group and a school group before me. But once I got in, it was fast. I enjoyed the view from the top of the tower. Very nice panoramic views. Not too crowded up there so you could enjoy yourself. Also they don't bother you up there so you can take your time and not feel rushed. I would recommend reading the signs they have up there, you will learn some interesting facts.

“Impressive, beautiful, peaceful and sacred Peace Tower”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2014

At the end of our guided tour of Centre Block on Parliament Hill we visited the Peace Tower, which stands at the front of Centre Block. The Peace Tower is officially named Tower of Victory and Peace and is so named to honour all the Canadian men and woman who died in World War I. The Peace Tower was built in 1927 and replaced the Victoria Tower, which was destroyed in the fire of 1916. The Victoria Tower was an integral part of the original Centre Block, but the 92 meters high Peace Tower is a free standing bell tower, called a campanile. The walls are of Napean sand stone and are carved with numerous stone carvings, keeping the Gothic style of the rest of the parliament buildings. The roof is covered with copper and its green oxidized colour gives the tower its distinguished look.
There is a small elevator going up to the observation deck which is right under the Peace Tower Clock. The lift can only be used by max 8 people at a time, so there is a wait of 20/30 minutes. Because of that the observation deck is never crowded. During the ride you can catch a glimp of the famous 53-bell Carillon, which sounds every 15 minutes, or can be operated from a large keyboard. The views from the top are magnificent. You can see the whole city of Ottawa and Gatineau and the view of the Ottawa River over the Library roof is breathtaking. If you look up, you can almost touch the Peace Tower Clock. After going down with the small elevator, you should visit the Memorial Chamber. It is the central component of the Peace Tower and is only measured 7 x 7 meters and has large stained windows. It is beautiful, peaceful and sacred at the same time. The chamber looks like a shrine. There is an altar in the middle called the Altar of Remembrance. On the Altar the first Book of Remembrance is placed. This Book holds the names of all 66.655 Canadian men and women who died in World War I. A second Book was added with all the names of the 44.893 Canadians who lost their lives in World War II. Since then 5 more Books were added in honour of Canadians who died in service of the Crown. Every morning at 11:00, the pages of the Books are turned. All in all an impressive experience, not to be missed!

TIPS:
-> There are daily guided tours of the Centre Block, including the Peace Tower;
-> The tour is free of charge, guides are knowledgeable, highly recommended!;
-> Get your time stamped tour tickets at the Hill Centre across the street;
