“Overpriced for lunch”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

I really enjoy this place, very relaxed not too stuffy with good fooe and great service. However the lunch menu is very limited and I understand the reason for that. However prices are a bit much. Salmon burger, tiny piece of salmon, the rest was all bun and a bunch of different salad leaves with olive oil on them. Not worth the 16.99 they charge.

AND the bathrooms really need to be cleaned more often !

I know I will be back, enjoy the restaurant, but really need to rethink lunch prices.

“Great place!”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

Great decor, relaxing, excellent service, good food, great local beer selections. Only down side was my dinner was cold. Excellent salmon, but it was cold. Too bad, would defiantly go back.

“Disappointing.”
Reviewed November 4, 2013 via mobile

As it is apparently run by same folks who do the Whalebone on Bank we had high expectations, but were sadly disappointed by the food. Oysters were great and perfectly shucked and presented (expected at a premium price) but the steak and kale - which took 40 minutes - was wildly over-salted to the point of mouth numbness. We sent it back, and after some fussing in kitchen our waiter eventually came back, said he would not charge us for it (well gosh thanks) and suggested we try something else on the menu. Not wanting to wait another 40 minutes, we ordered their frites and home made mayonnaise to finish out wine with but it was also disappointing. Lifeless frites, weird lemon flavored mayonnaise that was a bit nauseating. Nice ambiance, but the kitchen was disappointing, and the service a bit uninterested having to cope with customers not happy with the food. No Whalesbone. Sad.

“double the price, half the portions”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

We used to go the the Elmdale when it was a dive- great place to see a band/show.
I applaud the new owners for taking on the challenge of revamping the place; however, some black paint in the bathrooms and a bigger bar doesn't change that much.
Price- Apparently they put up they prices last week. $25-$35 for a meal!!!!!!! I really did not want to pay the price for anything on the menu other than pickled eggs. Price off liquor was normal.
Food- I don't eat seafood so I got salad and fries (fine). Others got a variety of dishes that were very small portions for the men at our table. The fish and chips were not what we expected and the edamame paste was not good.
Atmosphere- The new look can't seem to figure out what it wants to be- tavern, hipster place, fancy restaurant, ect. Our party was very confused. For instance, who puts $1.50 pickled eggs and $32 fish and chips together on a menu???????
Staff- We were 30 minute late to be seated. If staff inform previous guests they need to leave then that needs to be enforced. Also we were offered a drink while standing (no place to sit and wait) but no one came to follow up. We weren't offered a free drink or anything for 30 minutes of standing! Our waitress was nice and did a great job.

In conclusion, eat at another of the 50+ restaurants in the area and come later to see the band ($7 cover).

“One of our faves!”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

We tried the Elmdale for the first time since it was turned from pub into oyster bar, and absolutely loved it!

The atmosphere is great, still feeling like the old pub yet with a hint of flair and definite oyster bar feeling. Service was great too!

We ordered a serving of oysters, and they were just about as good as if we were sitting somewhere in the Maritimes! The sauces they serve with the oysters are a hit in themselves! We also tried the smoky jalapeno coleslaw, which I now want to make at home if I can find a half-decent recipe.

We followed up with an order of coconut curry mussels and lobster roll, and have to say, these too were delicious!

Dinner for two came to about a $100 with drinks, but if you forgo the oysters and drinks, you can eat here for the price of an average meal.

Definitely one of our new favourite places, but shhhh - don't tell too many people!
