A Voyageurs Guest House Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #39 of 53 Ottawa B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 6, 2013

I have not stayed at many B&Bs but this one seems typical. Fairly run down but pleasant enough.
The landlady was very pleasant and helpful, and cooked a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and hot drinks. We had to catch an early bus so missed breakfast that last morning, but we were given some muffins which was nice.
Wi-Fi is available free of charge.
We were in a back room, and it was small, but one thing I remember was the large hot shower in the ensuite.
Very convenient to the bus terminal, and 250M to restaurants and the number 7 city bus route.

Room Tip: Rear rooms are quieter as bus depot is across the road.

This accommodation gets rated 4/5 on hostelbookers.com but only 2/5 on tripadvisor. We took a risk and booked it anyway, had low expectations and weren't disappointed. I guess if you go to hostelbookers prepared to book into a hostel you'll be pleasantly surprised by a clean, private room in a guesthouse within 25 minutes walk of the downtown area of Ottawa and 10 minutes away from some great restaurants and bars. If, on the other hand, shared bathrooms in a tired, run down property where the curtains don't quite meet aren't your thing, I don't suggest you book here. Apart from the location and cleanliness we liked that breakfast was included, even if it is simple and designed to fill you up rather than wow you with taste and flavours. The lady who runs the place is also really helpful, welcomed us by our first names when we arrived and directed us to a great Thai restaurant for dinner after we arrived at 9pm on a Friday night. We found the atmosphere very friendly although we really only saw the other guests at breakfast. As for the bus station, we were aware of the engines ticking over from time to time but it was not loud enough to disturb our sleep. If you're concerned about the noise ask for a room at the back of the house and be prepared that the walls are thin! We would recommend to anyone on a budget but make sure your expectations of what you're paying for are realistic.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back will be less affected by noise from the bus station.

My daughter and I were having a quick stopover on the way to Montreal and booked this the night before . We arrived 4 hrs earlier than expected and on first sight the building was pretty tired looking and in need of redecoration. However, we received a really warm welcome from the lovely lady who appeared to be receptionist, cook and room maid! Our twin room on the first floor was basic but clean, as was the shower room next door. Breakfast was absolutely fine (veg omelette, potatoes, toast, muffin, juice, tea and coffee). An average B&B but an above average hostess who made our stay that little bit special. Management should give her a raise!

We left booking an overnight stay in Ottawa too late and ended up here.
The linen was clean and the showers hot. Breakfast was juice, omelette, toast, muffin and coffee.
The room was small, stuffy, and old. The building is very run down. Do not expect much.
Think it was way overpriced.

We stayed at "A Voyageurs Guest House" May 26-27 2012 for the Ottawa marathon. Overall the stay was very good, and we would stay there again if the occasion ever came up that we needed to stay somewhere in that area. The place is a bit of a fixer-upper, and on first glance I was a little bit nervous about staying there, but the woman who takes care of the place (not the owner) was an absolute peach!!! Really, if it wasn't for her, this would be a bad review... but for what the B&B lacks, she makes up for it by bending over backwards to make you happy!

My partner and I had booked an ensuite room but when we arrived we were given a room that required you to use a bathroom down the corridor. We pointed out that we had booked an ensuite room but the woman (although rather polite and nice) blamed this issue on hostelworld.com (who we placed booking through). This seemed to be a regular issue which does not make it acceptable for guests as you would imagine they would try and resolve this for future bookings. Anyway we were persistent that we had been mislead with our booking and she eventually agreed to give us an ensuite room but at a discounted rate (extra $60 for 2 nights). This was annoying not from the money point of view but just on principle. The place itself was very dated inside. The sheets were clean and the bathroom/shower in our room was fine. The breakfast in the morning was tasty enough but you were not given many choices other than if you wanted eggs and tea/coffee. Location wise, it was within reasonable walking distance of downtown. As others have mentioned it can be noisy. We were downstairs and at night the people above us made an almighty racket walking around on their wooden floor. If I was in Ottawa again I would stay somewhere else. The woman who runs the place is very friendly and polite but apart from that this place has very little going for it.

Alphabetically, this is the first "Downtown B&B" in the Official 2010-11 Ottawa Visitor Guide. Expecting the usual B&B amenities, charm and furnishings, I was shocked when I arrived at A Voyageur.
The good: (1) I got a same- day reservation, and good directions by phone; (2) Neera, the manager, is very friendly; (3) bedroom, bathroom and linens were clean; (3) bedroom had air conditioner, and wall-mounted TV ; (4) breakfast OK, eggs, potatoes, o.j., toast, coffee; (5) within a couple miles of Parliament, coffeehouses, lots of ethnic restaurants; (6) other guests were nice
The not- so- good: (1) I paid CA.$90, it's worth half that (2) scary looking neighborhood; (3) sauna-like July heat in hallway and breakfast room; (4) TV, fridge, trash, shopping cart in driveway; (5) furnishings looked old and tired
The Arlington B&B nearby is associated with A Voyageur so I assume it's similar.
