“A nice family outing”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

We visit the Arboretum often in the summer and fall. In the summer, we like to visit in the hour or two before sunset, as the day is cooling off. Walking along the paths, in the shade of the trees is very relaxing. The kids enjoy running along the path and back and forth over the bridges. There is a giant hill that is perfect for rolling down, or so says our two little ones!

In the fall, we go to see the changing leaves. Many of the trees are labelled with their names, so it is fun to try to guess and then verify if we are close. (Rarely -- but getting better!)

Bring your camera, and in the summer think about a picnic lunch. It's a great quiet spot in the middle of the city.

“Arboretum & Experimental Farm”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

This spot is a little off the tourist track, but well worth a stop. The Arboretum is a lovely spot to wander. The views of Dows Lake are lovely. Across from it are the flower gardens which are always in bloom and very interesting to visit especially if you are a gardener. Many of the plants are identified and it is a great way to discover new ones for one;s' own garden. If there are children with you, it is fun for them to visit all the different animals. The gardens are free, but the animal barns have an entrance fee. There is also plenty of parking.

“So much fun for the family!”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

I grew up in farm country, but my kids are city kids - they love going to the farm, especially in the spring to see the baby animals! There are spots to have a picnic and there is a really nice play structure for the kids who just need to burn some energy. Only down-side, they have recently implemented paid parking at the farm. :-( Otherwise, a great time for the whole family.

“A wonderful refuge in the heart of the city”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

The Arboretum is a large beautifully treed refuge in the heart (well, almost) of Ottawa. Mature trees were planted here - some almost a century ago - from all over the world. It's part of the much larger Experimental Farm - a national treasure if there ever was one, both for walking/cycling and for agricultural research (very worthwhile farm exhibits for the kids).

The Arboretum is bordered by the charming Dow's Lake and Commissioner's Park, by the Rideau Canal (including Hartwell's Locks), and by Prince of Wales Drive. Across the Drive are the Experimental Farm's lovely gardens.

We live on the other side of Dow's Lake, and frequently walk through the Arboretum. 12 months of the year, it's a real delight. Every day there's something different to look at - new plants sending out flowers, a slightly different vista because of changes in the weather, etc. Numerous interesting paths near the water, over the hills and through the Fletcher Wildlife Garden.

Give yourself a gift of nature, and visit the Arboretum. You'll come away refreshed and invigorated.

“Nature and Tranquillity in the City”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

If you ever feel like you just need a break and want to be surrounded by beautiful flowers and a nice grove, then head here and relax.

I really enjoy spending 15-30 min just taking in the fresh air and forgetting that your in the city, it is very easy to get to it and there is mostly parking available
