We kept going into the canal/Parliament area and decided to search for what was "the other way"- we found Sandy Hill. It would border on being a dive bar in the US, but the food was great, service impeccable, knowledgeable staff. Pierogies were great, almost came with too much bacon, which I never say! Poutine was also generous and good (maybe a tad salty). Super casual, you walk through mostly what is probably college rentals, felt plenty safe out and about.

There was at least a 15-20 minute wait to get just or drink order in.
The waiter had no sense of urgency. The food came quick once the order was finally in.
The venue is small but nice.
Don't get the spinach dip. It is clumpy mozzarella cheese mixed with fresh spinach, floating in spinach water.
The hamburgers taste homemade. The boyfriend really enjoyed his burger.
The haddock burger was a mush burger. I couldn't eat it.
The homemade ketchup tasted like salsa, but don't expect tortilla chips.

This is a regular Friday night place for us every few weeks or so. Not just a burger and beer joint (though the stuffed Molly burger is a real treat!), the chef goes out of his way to create interesting and varied dishes to occasionally add to a reasonable menu of choices. Portions are substantial, prices are reasonable and the service is always friendly!

Close to the University of Ottawa, it's become a bit of a not so well kept secret in the area that the food, drink and atmosphere at the SHL&G is well worth stopping in for.

This was one of my favourite hang out spots in the city. The brunch is especially delicious. My favourite is the eggs benedict. There is always unique options and the menu is constantly adding new things to try. Wonderful home cooked food.

Whilst staying with family we were taken to their 'local'. The place was very cosy and welcoming, the staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. The selection of beers and cider were great and the food delicious! We ended up going back again as we enjoyed the food and atmosphere so much. I can highly recommend the pulled pork poutine. Must admit I'm glad I don't live locally as my waistband couldn't take it! Looking forward to my next visit in a couple of years time.
