“Not to be missed”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

I believe that this this place should be featured more often as a good place to eat a small meal at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa if only because of the fine selection of sandwiches, soup, salads and drinks. But there is more to it than this. Quality art accompanies good food in a place that is an architectural achievement in itself. Sit on the patio or veranda and admire the landscape - the Parliament buildings themselves and the fiver. Sit outside on the lawn and walk around the building for getting a true flavor of the beauty of this site. I have been to the cafe on many occasions. I find it worth while to make a comment or two about the gallery's decision to make access to the cafe available to all who enter the gallery. In many ways this place deserves more attention than does the gift shop but for different reasons. I think it does receive many more visitors in proportion to what it provides. I have eaten soup and sandwiches and salads there. I do believe that the quality of the food is high and it is reason for you to make a visit there. I have visited this cafe twice during one visit to the National Gallery and I suggest that you do the same. Condiments are plentiful especially relish, lemons and mustard. Prices are reasonable. Ambience is excellent as you can imagine. Worthy of many photographs. Sit quietly for a quality experience on the patio and go outside. I did like the many sandwiches that I have ordered. Food for the sandwiches and salads was fresh. You might be doing yourself a disfavor if you think that this place can prepare and serve a four course meal for your nutritional needs. It can't. The question of service is irrelevant here since you wait on yourself. There is one person at the cashier counter and many people working behind the scene. They deserve some credit and praise. Scenic view is great. The quality of the tea served is good. I do recommend that you spend time there. It is well worth your time and money especially if you have benefitted from being inside the gallery.

“Bring back the Cafe!”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

The Great Hall is open yet the Café remains closed. This was such a beautiful space to enjoy a glass of wine mid Gallery visit. The food had come a long way as well. I was really looking forward to seeing what the chef had planned next. Seems like you were on the right track! Why hasn't it opened yet?

“Not worth it”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

I didn't find the tea at the National Gallery very good, especially compared to the tea at the Chateau Laurier. They offered more food here, but I found the quality and the service wasn't as good. First of all, they don't even bring you tea until about 30 min after you've arrived. Then the water wasn't even hot enough. You get one tea bag for the pot for the entire afternoon so by the end the tea is quite watery. They also didn't bring us any sugar or cream/milk for the tea or a spoon - we had to ask for all of this after realizing they didn't bring it. Then the milk came in those little containers you get at cheap breakfast restaurants - not very classy for high tea! The food was fairly bland as well. Also, the location is a bit weird. It's in the big glass area, but it is beside the children's play area so it was a bit loud with screaming kids. The atmosphere wasn't very good - you are out in the open and if you go on a sunny day bring some sunglasses as you are going to have the sun in your eyes the whole time! Definitely won't be back!

“I wuz robbed!”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

... of a potentially-wonderful time/meal! I made the mistake of requesting a table -- in its panoramically-great space, overlooking Ottawa's city center from floor-to-ceiling windows -- not beside the kitchen door, as the maitre' d first advised. I got a good table; but assigned to a waiter *devoted* to a six-table Baby Shower. He forgot *SO* much of our orders/made us wait SO long, that, despite the aspiring-excellence of most of our meal, I left with a headache.
I believe that, if you don't cross this restaurant's manager, you might LOVE it. But, truly, this was my second-worst dining-experience in all of Ottawa.
