“My rating may be a little too high, but this is why:”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

Inside the restaurant looks more like a small take-out than where you can wine and dine.
But the food was good and we enjoyed the Habesha special and with another dish we had enough for us 3.
But what was special was: "No Cutlery", no forks, no spoons no knifes; not that you needed a knife as the meat was very tender.
The menu showed how we were to cope: "take a piece of injera bread and use it to grab the various meats or vegitables".
The injera bread looks like a pancake but it is made from a grain I have never tasted.
We had an enjoyable experience and like to come back. Most of all it was only 1 small block away of our B&B whos hostess recommended it with a warning not to judge it by the atmosphere..

“Habesha in Ottawa great Ethiopia gem”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

The restaurant is easy to miss on the outside, but the food and service were great. Really friendly staff and good menu. I'm not a connoisseur of Ethiopian food, but liked this as much as larger places I've been to.

“Food was awesome, service was spotty”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

It seems we arrived during the staff/family lunch so we didn't receive the warmest welcome but honestly for us it was all about the food. We love Ethiopian food & don't have any cuisine even close to Ethiopian where we live. So we walked several blocks from our hotel to eat at Habesha.

We ordered the sample platter which had a little bit of everything. The smell alone made you drool. It was absolutely delicious.

The restaurant itself feels more like a cafeteria. But it was clean. They serve beer in addition to non-alcoholic drinks. I would go back for the food in a heartbeat.

“Excellent food , welcoming host”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

As many others have said, it is a simple setting , no frills but clean and open. We were visiting Ottawa for the first time, staying at a B and B close by but had planned to try the Ethiopian we'd read about. We got vegetarian food, with good counsel on choices, including how much to order and how to add on if needed.

The food was great, well prepared, well described, plenty to eat and very reasonable. But the highlight of the evening was the coversation: about life in Ethiopia, family, politics, culture, living in Ottawa - a window into a life and the neighborhood.

We left full in every way.

“No Frills but Good Food”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Throughly enjoyed my recent experience at Habesha. This very small restaurant is located up the street from the Horn of Africa (also an Ethiopian restaurant).

The food was tasty (ordered the Habesha Platter) and the service was good. The platter is enough food for two people in my opinion. They have a lunch special and do take-out.

The atmosphere is definitely simple but it didn't take away from the experience. A great tip from one of the other TA reviews noted that there is additional seating at the back of the restaurant in case the front is full (which was the case when I visited). Restaurant was clean and bathrooms were fine.
