“Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013 via mobile

Situated close to the major attractions (Parliament House, Byward Mall), this hotel is a stroll away from everything. Customer service was excellent; notably their Conceirge (Ronny) who gave us good info on how to get to the markets and use public transport. Beds were comfy and the room we had was spacious. Another pleasant stay in a HI. Join the Priority Club if you haven't done so - it's a free loyalty program (a perk is later check-out).

Not the very best price we could have had in Ottawa, but we were meeting up with our daughter's varsity hockey team and wanted to stay in the same location. We were able to take advantage of the team rate, so the price was pretty good.
Hotel is a bit tucked away, but close to a number of restaurants on Elgin St, and very close to the Canal. We were able to walk to the Canal and skate.
I'm always a little confused with my Holiday Inn reservation confirmation, mentions to ask for room upgrades and continental breakfast upgrades (implying they are free if available) for Priority club members (which we are). Yet when checking in we were told we would have to pay extra for a room upgrade, which would then include breakfast. Didn't feel the extra cost was worth the price, so stuck with what we had, knowing there was a diner on the corner that offered breakfast. Our room was great - it had a kitchenette with a full size fridge. Room was very large and we could see the Peace Tower from our window. Bathroom floors are heated, which was very cozy first thing in the morning.
Did find the room overly warm, and adjusting the temperature didn't really help, so we just turned the fan off and the room cooled down a bit.
Hotel wants to charge approx $20 (incl taxes) for parking, which is ridiculous at this time of year. Ottawa has free weekend parking downtown this winter. Check out the City of Ottawa website for the details. We parked at the free indoor lot on Fri night after the game, it was about 20 min walk to the hotel, but just parked on the street Sat and Sun. As long as there is not a lot of snow in the weather forecast, there is no need to pay for parking.
Lobby area is very small, and with only 2 people on the desk and a group arrival in front of us our check in was very slow.
Front entrance as a whole is very small. Found other travellers and even airport shuttle tended to pull right up to the front door and stand around with their car/van doors open, making it very awkward to get in and out of the hotel - this happened 3-4 times during our 2 night stay. Never saw a bellman the entire weekend, but would be good to have to keep the front entrance accessible.

Room Tip: Higher floor, north side you can have a nice view.

Location of Hotel excellent, close to all areas of Ottawa that we wanted to see. Hotel clean. Staff were very helpful and accommodating at front desk, in that they put us in the right direction of places we needed to go. Staff in restaurant were attentive. Food was good and plentiful. Room was clean and we loved the view.
With the weather so cold, thoroughly enjoyed underground parking. Will definitely be back.

A colleague and I stayed at the Holiday Inn and Suites on Cooper Street while attending Tete e Tete this week. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the front desk staff and the bellman were always available to lend a hand or assist in any way possible. Unbelievable service at this hotel. Our thanks to Mr. Wilson and his team, once again! YQGCA and YKFCA.

Had a bad experience with this hotel. Was scheduled to stay with this hotel for 4 nights. The room was very hot 75-80 degrees was the average temperature of the room at night. I asked on numerous occasions for them to fix their climate control in my room, or move me to a different room. The first morning I asked the front desk to look at the climate control and get my room cooler or reserve a different room for me for once I returned from work. When I returned, they had been by and there was a card left in the room stating that "heat and cooling system working normally"... In fact they had even turned on and he heat, so now my room was sitting at about 75 degrees. So asked them for a different room. The "only room they had available was on the same floor (top). I checked it out, but it too was too warm for me, around 74 degrees and the cooling system was also blowing heat, not cool air. I probably should mention that this took place in Ottawa in Jan.... I couldn't even open up a Window to get any outside air because when I did there was positive pressure which meant that the air just blew out of the windows drawing more warm air in from outside the room. After multiple attempts to get them to move me to a new room, I found them all the same and their answer was always, "sorry but it's an old system and with the mild weather we've been having....". Frankly I don't care how old the system is, it should be able to be controlled to suit he customer. Finally on the 4th night, when the temp reached 80 degrees, after not sleeping for 3 nights, i've had enough and I checked out and walked up the street to another hotel, nicer room, cheaper price, and AC that worked! The staff were patient with me but could not do anything to help, other than say sorry. Well folks, I'm sorry too because I'll never stay there again and it's not the staffs faulty.

Room Tip: Don't use hotel in mild weather if the AC is not on. The rooms use a central heating/cooling pl...

We stayed three nights on business. The room was very comfortable and well maintained. I liked the big closet simply because on this trip we were stopping over for meetings on our way to an extended overseas trip and the room was great to hold our extra luggage.

The hotel staff were all very helpful and accommodating. Tote your own luggage though (on one of the hotel's carts where necessary), there are no bellmen. It seemed to us initially that there were too few staff but we were served timely and well in all respects. Perry in the restaurant - acting as bartender, host and waiter - was busier than need be, but we were told the lack of help was only temporary and was to be corrected the next week. Regardless, his service, and that of the waitress at breakfast, was excellent in every way. They were fast, attentive, and friendly. Couldn't ask for more.

Surprisingly the food was very good, the menu selection reasonable, and price moderate.

Quiet comfortable surroundings in a great downtown location. We didn't venture out into the cold Ottawa weather (we are from Florida) but passed many restaurants and shops within a block or two of the hotel. Also near the Rideau Canal which was open for skating.

We would stay again - preferably in summer.

We look forward to staying at the Cooper Street Holiday Inn when we visit Ottawa. The location is perfect as it is close to downtown stores and restaurants, a short walk to Parliament Hill, steps away from the canal, and a very short and easy drive to The Parkway which is both a scenic drive and also provides quick access to the west of the city and to the Gatineaus. The service is excellent with the front desk staff always being exceptionally friendly, welcoming and responsive. Rooms are spacious and sufficiently appointed, though the decor could use some refreshing. They were cleaned daily and comfortably maintained. There is an onsite restaurant that provides a substantial but simple cuisine. There is a fitness room (though I have not used it). There is convenient underground parking (at an additional daily cost).

Room Tip: Higher rooms on the north side have a view of the Parliament Buildings. This is a pet-friendly hotel...
