Watching people physically crank these locks open and closed in an era where everything is automatic is entertaining and impressing. These folks have to be in great physical shape and very strong to pull this off. There are tons of boats lined up to use the locks in the summer when we were there, so we got to see many examples of the feat.

These are quite an impressive set of locks, with a fantastic historic story behind their construction, unfortunately they do not appear to be working locks any longer, the canal is empty, and unfortunately one or two of the locks were full of rubbish when we visited, it appear there are plans for the area, as a new paved area was in the process of being put in place, just needs that rubbish cleaning up, but don’t let that stop you from going down to have a look around, some good photo opportunities.

With the fall colours just finishing, it was a great time to walk down the path below parliament and check out the Ottawa locks. The reasoning behind the locks being built are pretty cool and the Byward Museum beside the locks has lots of information about the area....great hot cider too.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this remarkable system of locks and learn how they were created. It is a very interesting story with some surprising information. There is a small museum and coffee shop.

These locks are so cool and the area is great by the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. The area on both sides are a park setting. To the east is the Hotel and to the west is Parliament Hill. As the locks step down, there are also great views of the river. You can walk on top of the lock gates. Very cool and sidewalks lead down to the river edge and boat launch docks.

You can have a splendid walk along side the canals but to have time to spare watching the locks in operation is a treat, especially watching other people use the machanical system to raise and lower the lock water for boats to go up and down, well worth a visit.

An amazing feat of engineering in the center of Ottawa and other places along the lakes built to extend defences in bygone days, when much of the labour ws done by hand. Lots of information on borads near the site.

Wife and I have been touring Canada for 2 weeks and this was our last day in Canada. We loved being in Canada for 2 weeks.

It was very interesting to see a boat travel though the locks. Each lock required 2 workers on each side to manually open and close the lock.
