The locks are certainly a marvel, even in the spring when not in full operation. Fasincating to see the engineering that was undertaken for this marvelous feat. A great walk from around the Chateau down to the Ottawa river. Enjoy.

The locks is a great place to take visitors to enjoy a bit of Ottawa's history as well as its beauty. If you time it right, you can see the lockmaster operating the manual locks to let the boats through - a great experience!

The best way to experience any lock on the Rideau is in a boat and this one is no exception. The flight of locks in Ottawa is the most impressive on the whole canal, although Jones Falls is a close second. Take time to learn the history of how the locks and canal were built, it is an amazing feat in which many people lost their lives.

These locks hold the water in the winter time to form ice so skaters can skate a mile along the Rideau Canal just as the Peterborough Lift Lock # 21 & # 20 does but not as long. You can get your own private tail while skating without taking your skates off by visiting the Candy Stalls selling a mouth watering candy on a stick called Beaver Tail. It is getting so famous I heard it is being sold in New York City. Right on the ice there is also skate sharpening stands and food stands. The City Of Ottawa floods the ice and clears the snow. I prefer visiting Ottawa in the winter due to this long ice rink and less tourist traffic plus the neighbour across the road from me moved there a few years ago.

Interesting that you are able to get up close and even climb up on the locks. Not much else to say about them in the wintertime though.
