“Unique and fun, make the offort to go”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2010

I definitely recommend making the effort to go to the stables, it is unique and it is lots of fun, especially for kids. The horse they got to interact with acted more like a dog than a horse, it was incredibly funny. The guided tour is great.

“Horsing around in Ottawa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2009

We visited the RCMP stables with our 3 yr old grandson in tow. What a great place for kids...of all ages !

By the time we had visited the displays, taken lots of pictures, watched a horse & rider workout in the arena, and of course, visit the horses and their RCMP riders, we were almost dizzy – 3 yr olds go in so many directions at once !

Everyone at this facility, from the gift shop personnel to the members of the RCMP, everyone goes out of their way to project a professional but friendly demeanour.

This is a “must do” if you’re in the Ottawa area, even more so if you have kids in tow, or if you’re a horse lover, or interested in the history & pageantry of the Musical Ride.

We were only there for an hour (?)...Did we really spend that much on “stuff” in the gift shop ?

What a great place !

“Don't Miss this Unique Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2009

We are from the U.S. and had never heard of the Musical Ride before, but WOW we were impressed! Although the Ride was not at the centre the day we were there it was so much fun to watch the video, see the horses and hear about the history. We will definately be watching for the Ride at the 2010 Olympic opening ceremony!

The museum chronicled both the RCMP as well as the musical ride, and you get a free guided tour of the facility including the stables and fun stories about the antics of some of the beautiful horses! You can get there on the hop on hop off Grayline buses.

“Pretty basic tour”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2007

We stopped by the RCMP stables for their free tour of the stables. As we arrived, three tour buses also arrived. No one was originally at the tour office to tell us the time of the next tour, but eventually someone showed up. Before the tour, we were able to review various information on the RCMP and Musical Ride in their museum.

Once the tour began, we walked through the stables, but most horses were out on the Musical Ride tour in Saskatchewan. The few horses we saw were training horses and were all in their stalls. We did not see any Mounties training the horses during our tour. Overall, it was a quick tour, but informative on the requirements (both for humans and horses) for being in the RCMP Musical Ride.

“A stop On the Gray Line Tour”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2005

Sep 1, 2005. This is a stop on the Gray Line tour. We didn't allow enough time on our schedule for a tour, but learned some interesting facts as we passed by. Among the sights were the Parliament Bldgs; 24 Sussex Drive; Rideau Hall, Falls, and Canal; RCMP Stables –home of the musical ride; The Musical Ride contingent was away on tour, leaving just a few horses in training at the stables. Hundreds of officers apply each year but only 12 are chosen, with a maximum of 72 in the group at any one time. After the 3 year term is up, the officer must return to the previous posting. Female officers make up about 40% of the riders. Horses must meet rigid specifications for height, weight, color, intelligence and temperament.
