“Great location, not so great suite”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

I was excited to get a suite with a kitchenette so that we could cook and being groceries. I realize now there is a wide difference in definition of kitchenette. Our rooms kitchenette consisted of a bar fridge, coffee maker and an old microwave. No sink as promised, unless you count the bathroom sink, no countertop no hot plate or other cooking device. It was underwhelming. Room with two queen beds barely fit them with the closet unable to open unless you shoved the bed over. Best part was proximity to everything downtown. But that's it.

We spent two room nights using two rooms at The National. It was part of the Cosmos tour "Ontario & Eastern Canada" though we were supposed to be at Capital Hill. The rooms are very big, with a foyer, two nice one-seater sofas and we appreciated the microwave, which allowed us to buy stuff from the local groceries for reheating the next morning. They also have a balcony which we could have enjoyed if the temperature wasn't too low. As others had mentioned, it's well located, at the West end of Queen Street, which meant it was just a block away from the Sparks pedestrianized commercial street and within a 25-minute walking distance to the Canadian Museum of Civilization and 25 minutes walk from Byward Market, the two must-visit places. And there was a Tom Horton across the street which was convenient. The lobby is compact but well organized with a mini lounge with fireplace, a convenience store, and two side entrances.

On the minus side, the curtains don't seem to close fully so slivers of sunlight on each side would wake up my wife too early in the morning. Also, there seemed no way to regulate the temperature. The adjustable thermostat had three heat settings and no cool settings. So no way to make it colder. 3rd, the toilet amenities are classy - Olive Branch brand. 4th, the two elevators work too slow for the number of rooms and there were occasions when the tour group would be backed up for several carloads. 4th, the TV was so old style and so low-def it was embarrassing.

This hotel needs a serioys amount of work to bring it up to current standards. Room decoration date back to the 70's. Mold odour in the rooom. Everything looks clean however. Location is just unreal. Close by parlement hill. Price is reasinnable and reflects the age of the place.

We stayed here as a family from Apr. 8 - 11 and like others have said - the location of this property can't be beat as its smack dab in the middle of Ottawa. That was the only brightside.

For a non-smoking hotel (which used to be a smoking hotel) our room on the eighth floor had a stale cigarette smell which we complained about and it was promptly dealt with by spraying air freshener but what I think needs to be done to get rid of the smell overall is to pump fresh air through the building.

Air conditioning wasn't that great either as its a room unit instead of centrally controlled and the bathrooms were also a bit small, overall it was a okay hotel to sleep in and a good location but don't expect anything superb.

Dont get confused with the picture shown here. They are taken by some professional and have been altered to look very nice. We travelled there on 5th April evening and reached there early morning on 6th around 2am. The staff there was really non - cooperative. First the told us that they need to check with the manager as they have mentioned us as no show. After a struggle, they allowed us to get in but then they asked us to pay $15, on top of the room charges, for the parking which wasn't even assigned and was just a congested open space. The manager's behaviour was really bad. I am going to get contact of the owner and complain against him. They asked us for the car keys as they say its their policy to keep the keys. We gave them they keys and requested them not to move our car as its not easy to move it around. The manager guaranteed that they will not. But to our surprise, in the morning our car was moved and the manager was changed for morning. The people at reception, in the morning, were very nice and cooperative.

Also, most other hotels have breakfast included in the price, but they dont serve anything. The hotel is too congested and rooms are small. The washrooms are small as well. The only good thing of this hotel is that its location is close to the major attractions of ottawa other than that there is nothing.

I will never go there again and will not recommend anyone going there.

Room Tip: I would suggest get something in hilton chain they are far better than this for the same price.

Stayed for a night for my US visa appointment, my deciding factor to choose a nearby hotel. Did my booking through booking.com. Great price and didnt expect room to be soo big! Everything was really clean as well, except noisy air cond fan (just lower it). There was contruction beside this hotel but no disturbance or noise, room window facing contruction but didnt really matter to me. Located within the financial district (tim's, starbucks, subway for breakfast if you need). Two blocks to the parliament hill. ..and enjoy the short walk to rideau centre for shopping! Byward market is nearby too!

We booked that hotel because it's location, it's located just a few streets away from parliament hill and all the restaurant and tourist areas. We only stopped by Ottawa for I night and two days, so we wanna get the best out of it.
Although the location is great for this place, the hotel looks like a flip of a old run-down apartment building. It was dirty, people smoke out on the balcony and all the balconies are connected, it' s really unsafe, you can easily go on someone else's balcony.
Oh, BTW the elevator there is very small and scary.
