“good place for short stay”
Reviewed January 10, 2012

This hotel is well enough located near the parliment. If you can get a good price on the room it is fine for a short stay.

The Radisson Parliament Hill is a standard hotel offering great service! We were in the city for a friends wedding and it was a good for a couple of nights. It could use a facelift in terms of updating the technology (tv's, wifi, etc). It was very clean but the mattress is due for a replacement. There is not much to do at the hotel so it is great for a business traveller.

It is about a 10 minute walk to Parliament. Most of the "good" shopping is east of Parliament and the hotel is situated west which is about a 20 minute hike. The hotel is mostly surrounded by offices which means that there is not much of a selection close by for eating/going out after office hours.

I would say that all tourist attractions are no more than a 20 minute walk which is nice so you are not forced to use your car or take public transportation.

The parking rules have changed on the street and the lot across from the hotel so the best deal is to buy the in and out access to the hotel underground parking lot for $18/day. This is great in the winter when it is freezing outside!

Nice, smaller style hotel. Currently some of the rooms are a little dated but the hotel is going through a major room renovation quater 1 2012. That should make all the difference. Staff is friendly, about a 20 minute walk to the market but along the way you are walking through the Sparks Street outdoor mall.
There is a very nice Mexican restaurant on site - nice food. They also do breakfast which was very good.
No major complaints - it's not a 5 star hotel but you get great service, price is right and it's a good location.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room until all renovations are done early in 2012

I stayed here for 20 nights recently. Overall I would say that this is a very average hotel, and is not really suited to longer term business trips. After less than a week I was thoroughly sick of my room. The rooms are quite small and cramped. Not every room has a refrigerator, which seems odd. I asked for one and it was delivered almost instantly. It was noisy so I had to move it into the bathroom and eventually tinker with it to quieten it. No minibar either (probably a good thing). And no guest laundry.

The free (wired) internet access was OK but I had to to reconfirm every night, and it would silently stop working after 24 hours until you restarted the browser and reconfirmed.

The room was clean enough on the surface but a telling point was that a candy wrapper left behind a bedside table by a previous guest remained there for the entire 20 days of my stay.

The room lighting (in common with most hotels) is terrible. Why there isn't a bright full-room lighting system so you can see what you're packing etc is beyond me. Dim lamps in corners, even when all turned on, do not help guests trying to round up clothing from various drawers and closets.

Overall this hotel is tired and the rooms are too small for a long term stay. I should have asked for a hotel with bigger rooms and - most importantly - a guest laundry. We really needed one and were amazed this property did not have one. The hotel staff were mostly excellent but knew nothing useful about laundromats nearby. The "gym" was pretty feeble and is not a selling point. The garage car spaces are incredibly narrow and every day we wondered whether our rental car would have scrape marks down the side from other guests' vehicles.

The room layour was suboptimal, with the desk positioned across the window seemingly because that's as far as the power and internet cables would reach.

On the plus side, the restaurant/bar (Southern Cross) is excellent. Food is inventive and of high quality. Service at the bar and the tables is very good. If only there was an espresso machine, but it does seem to be difficult to find good coffee (and I don't count brewed coffee as good coffee) in Canada, other than Montreal. Reception staff were also very good. Having opening (sort of) windows was good, even in winter, to help freshen the room up. Heating/insulation was great; I rarely had to fire up the heater unit.

We've stayed here multiple times for business and pleasure and have never been disappointed. We like the easy access to the airport and walking distance to downtown. We stayed in the newer renovated rooms...beautiful & comfortable. We recommend it to friends who are heading to Ottawa time & time again.

We have stayed at this property a number of times in the past and had reasonably good experiences. This time however was much different and will be our last at this property!

Always in the past, staffs have been extremely helpful and accommodating. We were to again experience this shortly after check in when the controls for the bed were missing making the bed impossible to sleep in. From helpful maintenance to housekeeping we were sorted with a new room in short order.

It was the part of being unable to sleep the entire night due to a major party on the floor that quickly and permanently changed our perception of this property.

Around 11:30 PM we were jolted awake by the arrival of a major party on our floor.
Loud voices, yelling and screaming, people coming and going, doors banging, loud thumps and bumps coupled with drunken laughter made sleep totally impossible.

Starting at 11:30 PM we first reported this to the front desk. We were to make a total of three more calls throughout the night the last one being after 4:00 AM. We could hear someone from the hotel knock on one of the doors after each call and instruct them to keep it down. This did absolutely nothing and was ignored by the partiers!

By 5:00 AM we had had enough and packed our bags and checked out of the hotel. We had had less than an hour's sleep all night, we were exhausted. Our only hope was that the hotel at our next stop would let us check in early and we could get a few hours of well needed kip.
When we checked out the front desk person Julian apologized but explained that there was nothing he could do as they were “corporate guests”! When we questioned him further about the coming and goings all night he noted he had instructed the partiers going out doors to smoke and then returning to the room to “keep it down”.

This hotels policy of catering to their “corporate guests”, allowing them to party though out the night without fear of reprisal is to say the least disturbing and puzzling.

Apparently at this Radisson property “Corporate party guests” are valued over the rest of the paying guests who just have to suck it up!

Radisson did not even have the courtesy to reply to a complaint lodged through their web site. We are now questioning our loyalty to Radisson properties period.

No doubt the manager will rely to this review with the usual unapologetic “hope you will return” spiel………. We can save her the trouble - Not bloody likely!

This properties total lack of consideration for paying guests who are held hostage from a good night’s sleep by “valued corporate guests” is just not on period. We certainly will never stay at this property again and will most certainly advise our colleagues to avoid this hotel like they would the plague!

Room Tip: Do Not Stay Here Period

Having visited Ottawa many times on business, I found the Radisson Parliament Hill to provide a balance between convenience and price. One may stay more cheaply by lodging further out, but to have easy access to so much of downtown one would be hard-pressed to find a better price. I had enough frequent-visitor points to take my wife on a pleasure trip. She felt indulged by being able to stay in a better hotel than we could afford on our own.
