I have been working and visiting the Ottawa region for years but never stayed at the downtown courtyard by Marriott. I decided to try it. Quite a surprise. I liked the location, pool was great and the staff was just awesome. They were in process of doing some renovation but it did not affect our stay. We will certainly be back.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your review!

The location is advantageous since we are in the heart of the Byward Market. The pool is consistently refurbished to ensure quality since we want our guests to make the most of their stay. The last of the renovations (exterior painting) is being completed, weather permitting. However, the interior renovations have been completed. The renovations include the guest rooms, the Bistro, the lobby area, the hallways and the pool.

We look forward to having you back in the future and thank you again for posting a review.

We stopped and stayed here for three days on our way to Quebec City and visited friends. We always use Trip Advisor to give us an idea and all around grounding on where we should stay. I think that the best thing about this hotel we liked the most 1) Location-Can't beat it. You are right in the market area with great restaurants, bars, shopping...whatever want from downtown Ottawa. Really good. 2) Comfort-Room was really comfy. Bit of an odd colour scheme, but I swear the decorating colours chosen on the rooms shock you a bit when you walk in, but after a couple of days you get it and totally like it. I don't have words to describe, but it's pretty cool. 3) Friendly-Just plain friendly staff. Just great. Nuff said!

An all around

Such a good location and the rooms are roomy enough. Not huge, but not small like other brand hotels. Lots of room to move around. Definitely not cramped. And parking is super close. Right out the front door. Like that!

Firstly we would like to thank you for the review! We appreciate you feedback.

As you have mentioned our location is fantastic. It allows people to be within walking distances of attractions and many restaurants. Being in the market area provides guests with a great opportunity to discover Ottawa. We hope that you were able to experience the market during your stay.

We recently renovated and updated the whole hotel to match the new Courtyard look. We are happy to hear that you found the rooms comfortable and the style intriguing.

We do want all our guests to have a positive experience and we encourage our guests to come to the front desk with questions throughout their stay. Customer service is an important aspect to any guest’s stay and we do our best to ensure our guests enjoy themselves.

Again thank you for the comments. We hope to see you at the hotel again in the future!

My husband (44) and I (37)checked in on June 29 and checked out on July 2/13. Before booking this hotel we read many reviews from TA, many said that it was a noisy property but we thought that it was just city noise (buses, cars, people, etc.). We knew that it was located downtown in the Byward market and being from a city,we expected some noise, but we were not prepared for the level of noise we experienced. After the first night of no sleep, we purchased ear plugs and managed to get a few hours each of the other two nights wearing those.
We feel that the hotel should have forewarned their guests of the molson canadian beer tent that was errected on York Street, offering their guests the option to a room in the inner courtyard (which I hear is somewhat quieter). From the time we arrived until the morning we left, their was music being played so loud, a hundred feet away from our hotel room window, we couldn't hear ourselves think. We didn't bother to ask for another room because we had unpacked our things and really we didn't believe that any room was very quiet, based on the street noise noticable walking throughout the hotel.
On Canada Day while exiting the hotel from the back stairwell (also and emergency exit), we noticed that there was baracades and construction signs blocking the exit. Our first thought was that can't be safe not to mention illegal. We returned in the afternoon and the exit was still blocked by these items, in the evening I decided to tell someone at the front desk, he said he would speak with his manager. The next morning the baracades were still there.
While it has a great location, friendly staff and clean rooms our trip to Ottawa was overshadowed by the level of noise from the street. Being our first time in Ottawa we would have appreciated an heads up from the hotel of the events on York St.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback as this allows us to improve our service for future guests.

We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay. While we are located in a vibrant area and can cause some noise to be heard in our room facing the Byward Market, the situation you experienced during Canada Day weekend was not a normal occurrence. Being located only minutes from Parliament and Major’s Hill Park, the Byward Market is a central hub for many of the festivities going on during that time. This included several outdoor concerts located on the blocks surround the hotel, which could be heard within the hotel. Again, outdoor concerts in near proximity, and thousands of people celebrating, are not the norm and only occur once a year during the Canada Day celebrations. Because we are aware of the unique circumstances which surround the area on Canada Day, we did send out emails to any guests with contact information on file who would be staying with us over the weekend to advise of road closures, added security measures the hotel was implementing and more, in order to ensure our guests were properly informed prior to check-in.

While we’re glad that you enjoyed our staff and location, we are saddened that your overall experience with us was not a positive one. We hope to have the opportunity to your host your next trip to the Nation's Capital so that you can enjoy our hotel and the Byward Market under normal circumstances.

Chose this over the Courtyard East this time because of its location near the Byward Market. The location truly is excellent! There is so much life and activity in the area you can go out anytime and have fun.
The hotel itself is fairly small and quiet, thanks in part to its weekend quiet hours. The staff were warm and welcoming and always helpful. Our room was small, with a tiny bathroom and a door that opened onto anyone sitting on the toilet. It reminded me physically of an old commercial traveler hotel rather than one where a family would stay.
Parking was difficult, with not enough slots and some very narrow ones. Our one problem was that we inadvertently left the Do Not Disturb sign on the door until 1 pm Sunday and then our room didn't get cleaned at all, despite calling the front desk when we returned to the hotel at 6 pm. However, they brought fresh towels and gave us free breakfast to compensate.
Whatever the flaws, they were minor and far outweighed by the staff and of course the location.

We want to thank you taking the time to tell the Trip Advisor audience about your experience at our hotel!

We’re happy that you enjoyed our central location and found our staff to be helpful and welcoming! We’re sorry to hear that there were aspects of your stay that were not up to your expectations. Our property is quite old and while we have renovated and brought most aspects up to date, some things such as the existing structure could not be modified. It makes us proud to know however, that when issues arose, such as your room not being cleaned, our staff rose to the occasion and worked to correct the situation.

Again, we’re glad you had a positive experience with us and we hope to see you again soon!

When we checked in to this great location (on a Friday) in the middle of the Byward market with scores of restaurants and other diversions, we were asked to sign a pledge to observe quiet from 9PM-9AM. What a great idea in order to get a peaceful night's sleep. If you want additional quiet away from street noise, request a room facing the inner courtyard.

We want to sincerely thank you for giving us such positive feedback!

The Byward Market is a vibrant area, both day and night, offering boutique shops, small art galleries, a farmers market, over 100 restaurants, pubs, clubs, etc… and so much more! While this offers our guests a lot of activities, it can also present us with unique challenges and we found that by having our “quiet hours” explained at check-in, our guests are empowered and are more likely to contact us in the unfortunate event that they are being disturbed by other guests. We work to maintain a relaxing environment within the busy Byward Market. We’re happy to hear that you appreciate our efforts. You also offer a great suggestion; our courtyard facing rooms are not as susceptible to the goings on in the area.

We’re glad you had such a good time staying with us and we hope to host your next visit to the Nation’s Capital!

Outstanding location, service and staff assistance. Made our short
stay in Ottawa a pleasant experience. Within walking distance of
Historic area, outstanding Restaurants and THE BYWARD MARKET!.
Also easy walking distance to Tour Bus facility for the very popular
Hop on Hop off bus tour. Another plus is that there is a Taxi stand
outside the front entrance to the Hotel-- a quick trip to Via Train
Station.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts about our downtown Ottawa hotel!

We’re always appreciative of great reviews and glad that you had such a great stay with us, largely due to our excellent location and our friendly staff. The Byward Market offers a large variety of shops, restaurants, and more! During the Canada Day long weekend, there is even more to see and do with outdoor concerts and other celebrations only a short walk from the hotel. We also understand that sometimes small conveniences, such as a 24hr taxi stand, can help our guests during their stay as they don’t have to worry about arranging transportation.

Again, we’d like to thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon in the Nation’s Capital!

Check in went smoothly. The room was clean and overlooked a courtyard. Lots of channels on the television. There is a small refrigerator in the room. We had a king size bed and a sofa, two tables and a desk in the room. Plenty of lighting choices in the room. It was very quiet in the room. Hotel within walking distance of Parliament Hill and ByWard market. Lots of choices for restaurants. We got a snack and drinks in the evening at the Bistro in the hotel for happy hour. The bartender was very nice. We also went to the Bistro in the morning for Starbucks coffee and tea. Indoor pool and hot tub were very nice and enjoyable. Water in the pool was not freezing cold - the temperature was just right. Did not use the fitness center but the equipment looked new. Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. We were booked for one night and liked it so much we stayed a second night. There is a shopping mall within walking distance too. We would definitely stay here again. Great choice!
