“Historic and Beautiful”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

We stayed at the Chateau Laurier for 5 nights. The location is great - minutes walk from the convention centre, Rideau Centre, and really close to Byward Market. The hotel is stunning and you have to take a look at the historic pictures. It is elegant and spacious.

The rooms were good, although, the carpet needed a bit of a steam clean. The bed and pillows were good, but the duvet was not entirely comfortable. But overall, it was pretty awesome. It was great to be close to everything.

We took a walk to tour the mint and also walked to the National Gallery.

Front desk service was great - check in and out was seamless. The older gent at the concierge desk was super cranky though. He made it seem like we were inconveniencing him by asking him to get our bags. (!)

Room 211 was amazing - spacious, quiet, great bed, huge bathroom, wonderfully set up for business needs. No tub, but huge shower with good water pressure.

Pool facility is great if you love to swim laps, which I do. The water was cold, but you quickly get used to it. It's lacking a hot tub and/or a steam room though, which would make the area perfect. The fitness facility is fantastic, and the pool/fitness change rooms are amazing, best I've encountered at a hotel.

Front staff was helpful and friendly whenever we had questions or needs. Housekeeping staff was very friendly, always said "hi" to you no matter what hallway you walked down, and our room was always quickly cleaned, but cleaned well. Staff forgot to refill our toilet paper one time, but a call to the front desk quickly remedied it. The outdoor staff could use some training; we were never helped with our luggage when we checked in or out, and only once was the door held open when we arrived back on site. The outdoor staff at the Quebec City and Banff locations are wonderful; the Ottawa site could learn some things from them.

The facility itself is wonderful to walk around, definitely prettier than the Fairmont in Quebec City. Not as many stores though, and no spa like Banff's location, but still worthwhile to check out and walk around. The rooms are all gorgeous with high ceilings and regal, updated decor. They were also very comfortable for our conference needs. The outdoor grounds behind the hotel have a great pathway along the canal and lead right to the National Gallery. It also located in the heart of downtown and only a few minutes walk from other sites such as Parliament and Byward Market.

We only tried out one of the restaurants on site, Zoe's Lounge. The live music is a treat and a great amenity other Fairmont sites should have. The food and drinks, while amazing, were very pricey, especially for the portion size. Unfortunately, we did not have good service at Zoe's Lounge, which is a shame, because it did deter us from enjoying other nights there for that end of the day business night cap.

If we attend another conference in Ottawa in the future, I would definitely consider staying at the Fairmont again.

The Chateau Laurier is THE place to stay in Ottawa. Location, quality and attentive service. Salt-water exercise pool! Well-maintained. What a hotel should be; not like all the others. Hotel has a grand history, yet is very "present" for today's traveler.

Although we did not stay here, we thoroughly enjoyed walking through the lobby, browsing the walls of pictures, the ballrooms, etc.
Fairmont HotelChateau Laurier, was built by the Canadian Railroad to bring customers to Ottawa. It is a Gorgeous building, with very ornate carvings and painted ceilings, verdigris copper turrets, etc.,pictures on wall when rooms rented for $2 night EUROPEAN plan in early 20th century.
Definitely worth a visit after a tour of parliament or a walk back from the Byward market.

The Chateau Laurier is Ottawa's most historic hotel. The lobby is grand and opulent. The hallways are long but nicely decorated.

We had a view room overlooking Confederation Square and Parliament Hill. The room was a generous size with a shabby genteel feel about it. The bed is comfortable, the linens of good quality.

We had breakfast in their dining room. Along with the usual breakfast fare, they have a platter of cinnamon bun-like pastries which were like a croissant dough. The whole platter was drenched in maple syrup. These were exceptional.

The only downside to our stay came at checkout. Breakfast was included in our room rate. The only additional charge that I was expecting was a $6.00 tip which I'd added to the breakfast bill. When I was presented with our bill at checkout, there was a $9.00 charge. I queried it and the clerk went back and verified the charge. She apologized and reduced the tip charge to $8.00. I assured her that I had clearly written $6.00 on the bill. She then said she would have to go to the dining room to verify my claim. I suggested that she might just take my word for it, after all, hotels do block a larger amount on one's credit card to allow for charges that arrive after guests depart. Regardless, she disappeared for about 10 minutes and came back acknowledging that my original claim was correct. To her credit, she waived the tip amount altogether but assured me the server would still receive it. She couldn't give me back the 10 to 15 minutes I'd lost.

There is clearly a bookkeeping issue at this hotel. I'm sure most people don't even check their bills. Based on my experience I would strongly advise everyone to do so.

With that in mind, we will return. It's a lovely property.

2 night stay at the Fairmont did not disappoint. Took the advice of a reviewer and stayed on the 2nd floor. This floor has been recently renovated and the room was delightful. I asked for a late check-out which was unavailable as I was told the 2nd floor is a “priority floor”. Didn’t use the pool or gym facilities but loved the look of the art deco pool.

Location was perfect – walking distance to just about everything. Architecture of this historic building is worth seeing.

Only down side is the noise from the room next door. Thin walls – could hear the iphone conference call of the guest next door at 7:30 on a Sunday morning.

Room Tip: Room 276 had a view of the ByWard Market area and 2nd floor rooms have been recently renovated

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier is well-placed and next door to the Parliament Buildings, making it easy to walk there for photos and a tour. Exiting to the left of the front doors is Sussex Street, at the lights, and taking a left there and then a right at George Street brings you into the Byward Market section (lots of restaurants, cafes, bars, etc.). Also down the street is the Rideau Centre (shopping mall). Was impressed with being able to check in by mobile phone, and having room ready and available immediately upon arrival. Personnel at the Gold Level were professional and excellent, especially Cynthia "thank you". Always addressed by name and welcomed. The Lounge on the Gold Floor (4th floor) is nice, with breakfast items offered, and evening hors d'ouvres, but is a tad small, as on several occasions, there was not a seat available. The good thing, is that you can ask for a tray and take items back to your room. For folks wanting espressos or capuccinos, you need to ask a service staff member to make it for you, otherwise regular coffee and tea is available in the Lounge. My room was #681 and it provided a semi view of the Parliament buildings, parking lot and a glimpse of the canal (not the best view). Room was ample size. The mattresses are the most comfortable I have found in a hotel to date. If you are a Fairmont Club member, internet is free.
The only negative thing was that the door to the room was faulty in that when the door shut, it did not lock - you could easily push open the door without turning the handle. I was able to fix it for our stay, but pointed out that engineering should properly check it for the next visitor staying in the room to ensure door locks upon closing. Found all hotel staff to be extremely helpful and polite - true quality customer service - thank you for a wonderful stay.
