“First Class Location”

We enjoyed Thanksgiving weekend at the Chateau Laurier. The room was comfortable, the restaurant superb, and service just wonderful. We enjoyed the proximity to the National Gallery, Parliament, and the many pubs nearby. The piano music in the lounge made the evening special.

Room Tip: We upgraded to a double size room. It was extremely comfortable with a great view of Parliament.

A beautiful historic hotel that is well maintained and has great service. A lot of the time it can be expensive but we just stayed for a long weekend there during the popular Winterlude festival and we were able to get a rate that was just as cheap as any Days Inn or Holiday Inn. What a different experience?

The hotel is close to everything for us. Along the Rideau Canal, near the Parliament buildings, a few minute walk from the great Byward Market. A block away from a shopping mall and pedestrian street.

All this convenience and a staff that is always there to serve you. Also they have a pretty great fitness centre and pool.

Loved it.

we were on family day weekend and wanted to spoil our family by staying at this awesome looking and great location hotel. Staff were great our entire visit. Very helpful. all the common areas in the hotel were spotless. once we got in our room and it had a musty smell, we a bit disappointed. It is a 100 year old building so we overlooked that. we had to retreive something that fell behind the nightstand and that is where we saw a large amount of dust all around the old outdated carpets. the cleaners must not have vacuumed the floor against that wall for years. it was terrible. We love Ottawa and will be visiting again but may try another one of the great location hotels instead of this one next time. there are many to choose from

Room Tip: double beds are short for a normal 6 foot tall person. make sure you get a Queen

Dear Dan,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your comments.

We have very stringent housekeeping policies, so I was concerned to read about your comment regarding dust behind the nightstand. Rest assured, I have brought this to the attention of our Director of Housekeeping and we will be looking into this further.

I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back.

Once again thank you for your time.

I was so impressed with the entire Fairmont "experience"!! Right from honouring our special requests for an early check in, having very courteous staff at the front desk, restaurant and every where in between. Our room was fabulous!! It was spacious, grand and the view of Parliament was stunning! My only real comment to Fairmont that they may want to consider is not charging for internet service or use of the Business Centre. It seemed a bit trivial in the overall cost and not really in keeping with todays market. Just a suggestion.

Room Tip: Room 212 had a fantastic view of Parliament. It was however a bit of a hike from the elevators

My boyfriend had never been to Ottawa, so I decided to pick this hotel. We arrived June 30 and stayed for two nights. It was the most amazing feeling to be situated in the heart of Ottawa. Not only did we have a view of the Locks, the river and Parliament Hill, our room was very clean and we had no issues at all with any amenities at the hotel. The front desk staff were so friendly and so professional. In today's day, that is rare. The Security would not let the general public in the hotel to browse as the crowds were over 200,000 people (July 1st). We went to a nearby grocery store and bought some salads; the hotel staff fetched us bowls and cutlery so we could eat in our room. Don't hesitate to stay here. Take your time to walk around on the lower levels and look at all the old pictures. This is actually something we enjoy doing at all the Fairmont Hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the locks, 4th floor, end of the hallway away from the elevators

We spent one night at the hotel and we had an ok stay. The room was comfortable but the furniture would need to be replaced. Also, the swimming pool was very cold and there is no whirlpool.

The service in general was not up to the Fairmount standards, maybe because their workforce is comprised of many students who don’t really seem to care about the service they give.

The room service was very good, the meals were some of the best I had in a Fairmount hotel.

Next time we go in Ottawa we will most probably try another hotel.

Dear Annie,

Thank you for your comments.

I am pleased to tell you that many of our rooms have undergone recent renovations with another phase to take place this summer.

In addition to our recent bedroom renovations, we have also completed a renovation of Wilfrid’s Restaurant and the hotel’s main lobby.

I regret that we did not meet your expectations with regards to the service you received. Your experience is certainly not typical of the high level of service we strive to provide.

Once again, thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

This hotel has a lot going for it - great location next to the Parliament Buildings, interesting history, nice exterior. But like a lot of the grand old CP hotels, it's having a job keeping up with its reputation. When we arrived, it was the start of a busy, three day weekend, so the place was very busy. We spent a few minutes looking for someone to take our luggage from the taxi driver (we had a few pieces so it wasn't easy to take it all in, especially since a sign told us that we could only go in via the small revolving doors). We finally found someone but after an hour and a half, our luggage hadn't arrived. We called down and an apologetic bellman brought it.
If you notice smells, you probably shouldn't ever stay in old hotels - they can't help it. They just smell musty in the hallways and rooms. Our room was quite small and the bathroom, very small. All of the usual amenities were there. But certainly nothing special. It felt stuffy and too hot, and with -20 outside, it felt a little weird turning on the air conditioning, but we did. The poor old radiator-style cooling/heating was a bit noisy and took a long time cooling the room down. We found out the next day that you can open the window a little which was more helpful.
Sunday brunch was competent but I've seen better, but Wilfred's dining room is very nice with comfy chairs. Afternoon tea at Zoe's was fine, but our waitress was quite unfriendly - for instance, when my husband, who is friendly in that kind of situation, put out his hand to receive the bill, she dropped it on the table about six inches from his hand. Just odd for a hotel like this.
The fan in our washroom wasn't working and a light is burned out but hasn't been replaced. It's details like this, small as they are, that start to build an impression of a hotel. When my husband comes here on business next month, I know he'll look for a different hotel.

Room Tip: It's a plus to be looking at Rideau Canal, especially in winter when all the skaters are out. We...
