“Bar and location are the high points. Overpriced small rooms”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

I stayed here with my wife on our 2nd trip to Ottawa. Great location near the Parliament. I paid for a deluxe king upgraded room and I was really disappointed. It was tiny and the window was miniscule and there were pigeons outside making a racket. I asked the bellman and he said this was one of the upgraded modern rooms. I can imagine what the non modernized ones are like. The hallways are a mile long and if you are looking to get exercise getting back and forth to your room this your place. The breakfast buffet was nice but pricey. My wife who doesn't eat much got coffee and juice and I got the buffet which was $26 plus 13% tax and a tip. If we both had it the price would have been around $70 including tax and tip. This is an expensive luxury hotel with rare room specials. I have stayed at many luxury hotels including 6 different 4 Seasons, St Regis in NYC and Claridges in London and this was nowhere near their class. Self parking is $26/day plus tax valet was $38 plus tax. Internet $15/day. Fridge $25/stay Microwave $25/stay. These endless charges are ridiculous for a luxury hotel and really add up. My tab for 3 days was over $1000. The bar was great and I suggest you stay elsewhere and come here for a drink.

Room Tip: Ask how large your room will be. How many square meters so you won't be disappointed.

We stayed on the Gold Floor at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier over Labor Day weekend. First the good. The hotel has a great location, the staff is wonderfully cheerful and helpful, the food in the Gold Lounge is good...especially during evening cocktails, and surprisingly the lounge was not overly crowded even at breakfast. the only real negative was our suite...dark, with only one small window, and very strangely laid out. We immediately asked to move to a deluxe room. It was much smaller, but had two comfortable chairs (why don't more hotels put more than one lounge chair in a room?) and better yet, two windows overlooking downtown Ottawa. We had just enough space and plenty of light. Unfortunately, these older hotels have small, out of date bathrooms and the decor really needs to be refreshed and make a tad bit more contemporary. But again, the great location and wonderful staff makes this a very good choice when visiting Ottawa.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an exterior view whether on the Gold Floor or not.

We spent four days at the Chateau Laurier in September for a conference. The lobby was really impressive and full of history. Staff was nice enough, but still not exactly up to the best hotel standards in other parts of the world.
We tried the lunch in their restaurant which I tend to avoid as hotel food is oftentimes disappointing. Well this one was a great buffet of well prepared dishes for a reasonable price .
The room was spacious but the bathroom needed a major overall and belonged to the highway motels from the sixties. It proved a disappointment there is plenty of space in the room to improve the design and bring this important aspect of hotel stay to the modern era.

Overall a nice stay in a pleasant but overly quiet city where not much happened at least while we were there. The possibilities to attend a nice show were almost non existent as the National art Center was not advertising any event and it did not look like anything was happening anywhere. Maybe the wrong season. We are not talking New York, Chicago here. Kind of too bad for the National Capital of Canada.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room if possible. First time there, my room was really small. Second time it was al...

We stayed here during the first week of September 2012.

The location is ideal, the lobby is beatiful, the room not that great.

The first thing you will notice about the rooms at the Laurier is that they are very run down looking. Our room was small and ugly, at $500 a night I was expecting better. The walls and doors are also thin so you can hear ALL the noise coming from the hall and your neighbours room. We had one small window with a terrible view. The wall paper was dirty and peeling from the walls and the room had a distinct cigarette smell to it even though it was non smoking.

The bathrooms are disgustingly rundown, the floor tiles in the washroom looked so worn the grout in between the tiles looked unsanitary. The hairdryer in the washroom connected to the wall was broken the back piece rattled when you turned it on, I only realized how awful it was when it started smoking (total safety hazard). Also, and this is part of the historic charm (it is an old hotel) the shower head was so low that my husband who is over 6ft had a hard time washing his hair because the bathtub was small and the shower head was so low, I am 5ft tall and it was close to my head, definitely not a place for tall travellers.

As with most Fairmont properities we have stayed at the service was better than most places, when we entered our room there was a plate of cookies and chocolates waiting for us,the coffee machine was a pod machine so the coffee was especially good for "room" coffee.

The food in the lounge was only ok, I didn't expect my stuffed chicken breast to have a bone in it and still have the skin attached so I was not thrilled with my dinner choice, but the atmosphere would be hard to beat.

Room Tip: Sign up for the Fairmont club card and the internet is free. Stay in another downtown hotel, ther...

Stayed 3 nights on the Sept long weekend. The location is wonderful, beside the Rideau Canal, just a few blocks from the river, and over looking the Parliment buildings. Our room was spacious enough, but it would be nice to have 2 queen beds rather than 2 doubles. The service at the hotel was fantastic, as it always is at the Fairmonts.

Although I don't stay at Fairmont hotels too often I have to admit that the service and quality is always above average. For this stay I decided to stay on the Gold floor and the experience was even better, the staff on that floor cater to your every need and make sure that you are satisfied. To get that extra touch you have to be a President club member, the services supplied are next to none and this hotel makes certain that you receive what you deserve.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the side of the rideau canal, corner suite if possible, you have a great view...

We visit Ottawa regularly and always wanted to stay in this hotel. Finally having stayed there, we must say we are not impressed at all. This is a very charming building, with the high ceilings, nice fabrics and quality panelling and furniture, but... it is very outdated.
The carpets are escaping the mouldings, the paint is flaking from the ceiling and everything looks very OLD. I guess we were a bit unlucky with our room. It was very smelly! We should have gone back straight away and asked for another room, but didn't. The air conditioner was very loud all night and the alarm clock woke us up at 5 am because apparently the latest guest had set it that way...
No, we will not come back to the Chateau Laurier, unless we hear that they have done a complete renovation of the premises. Until then we will stick to The Westin...
