“Old charm but in desperate need of renevation!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

We visit Ottawa regularly and always wanted to stay in this hotel. Finally having stayed there, we must say we are not impressed at all. This is a very charming building, with the high ceilings, nice fabrics and quality panelling and furniture, but... it is very outdated.
The carpets are escaping the mouldings, the paint is flaking from the ceiling and everything looks very OLD. I guess we were a bit unlucky with our room. It was very smelly! We should have gone back straight away and asked for another room, but didn't. The air conditioner was very loud all night and the alarm clock woke us up at 5 am because apparently the latest guest had set it that way...
No, we will not come back to the Chateau Laurier, unless we hear that they have done a complete renovation of the premises. Until then we will stick to The Westin...

Stayed two nights at this hotel. It was an amazing place to stay in with staff who were pleasant and courteous! If you are celebrating a very special occasion use this very special hotel. It is located close to shops, restaurants and historical places of interest. Would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone.

We stayed 4 nights at this Fairmont. We've stayed at many throughout North America. I agree the hotel is needing some work but they were doing a major remodel of the Fairmont Gold area when we were there. The lobby furniture probably needs a redo though as it is the initial presentation to the visitor. The staff was fabulous and we had good recommendations made for dinner in the area.( "Eighteen" - is a fabulous restaurant not that far away) We arrived on a late flight so got in after midnight and the security manager assisted us immediately with our bags as the bell man was busy. We had a deluxe room and it was spacious. Our bathroom had been updated and furniture in the room was nice. The hotel has lots of historical photos to view as you walk around. The service in the restaurant was very good and food was good as well. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The location of the hotel is a big plus as you are close to many sightseeing options. Byward market and other shopping is close by this hotel. We didn't bother renting a vehicle here because of the close proximity to the sights ( right beside Rideau Canal and Parliament). The War Memorial, Parliament, Boat tours on the canal, and tour bus pick up is all very very close by.

Truly shocked to see some recent less than favorable reviews. Thought the place was gorgeous inside and out. Snagged a corner room on one of the highest floor. It was pristine, nicely decorated, and huge. Awesome views too. Location was perfect. Parked the car when we arrived and didn't need it at all for the three days that we were there. The staff members that I talked to were the most thorough, competent, and friendly that we enountered in any of the several places we stayed at while visiting Ontario and Quebec. Look forward to staying there again.

I love Fairmont Hotels -- but not this one. The room was small, the air conditioning didn't work, the bathtub wasclogged, and the bed was uncomfortable. Still, the location is fantastic, the building is beautiful, and the staff, like at all Fairmont properties, is excellent. But this place needs a rehab. Don't expect luxury accomodations.

I have used and stayed at a number different Fairmont hotels around the world. And the quality is typically outstanding. With this hotel, either my expectations were too high or something was different here. The obvious presence of trainees everywhere and folks who not answer questions or deal with simple customer questions was quite disappointing. The room was as well mediocre at best.

I've stayed here before, and I know that the glamor of the main floor is not exactly matched by the condition of the rooms. But this time was a real disaster, and I'll never stay here again, especially when there are so many excellent hotels nearby, at better rates. I had a room with two double beds. The mini-fridge had been removed (leaving a gaping hole), but the price list was still there. There was no safe. In the middle of the night, I awoke because green strobe lights were shining in my eyes. They were blinking lights from the smoke and CO detectors on the ceiling, perfectly positioned to hit my eyes. I was too sleepy to realize I should switch to the other bed. Instead I built a tent with the sheet and pillows, which worked until I turned over in bed and the tent fell apart.

I had a 7 am meeting. At 6 am, when I turned on the shower there was no water (none in the sink, either), just blasts of noisy air spitting at me. After 10 long minutes, I had a thin, lukewarm stream I could shower in. (I've had better plumbing at hotels in Belarus!) Even this could have been worse: A colleague awoke at 2:30 am to the sound of Niagara Falls in his bathroom -- a very noisy flushing toilet that would not stop flushing. A plumber came and after a half hour of banging (which must have thrilled the occupants of the room next door), fixed it.

Neither the web check-in nor check-out resulted in the promised email confirmation. And if you want a copy of your restaurant bill, you have to ask for it and check that it is indeed your bill (mine wasn't).

Don't eat there - it's 'way overpriced, and there are far better alternatives within walking distance.

Room Tip: Don't!
