Owner description: WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

We enjoyed wandering around the area and the market, we particularly enjoyed the English style Fish n Chips (sorry I can't bring myself round to saying Fish n Fries!). We were served quickly with freshly cooked food by a peasant young lady in a busy, clean FnC cafe, didn't get the name but I think there's only the one. Interesting to walk around this area and just look, lots of other shops nearby including a Bay and the Rideau Centre, a shopping mall. Not far to walk to the Rideau Canal locks and the Government buildings, Parliament Hill etc.

We spent an afternoon strolling around the market enjoying the various vendors and food. It has a little bit of everything. Yes, it can get quite crouded so go with that in mind. We enjoyed our time and had great fun chatting with locals and other tourists.

If you come to Ottawa this area is a must see. The restaurant, shops and market as well as the nightlife give visitors lots to see and do. Something for everyone, lots of pubs as well if you need a little refreshment. If you need some fresh vegetables, fruit, cheeses etc. you can find it all here.

This area is the pits: panhandlers, drug dealers, drug users, cheap restaurants, cheap stores (except along Sussex). Architecturally a wasteland.
Not worth the detour.

Nothing to dislike....food, crafts, people....all excellent! The way the produce is displayed is awsome. I am from Winnipeg and to me the Byward Market area is just a HUGE out/in door version of the The Forks.
