Owner description: WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

“A taste of old Ottawa.”
Reviewed August 27, 2013 via mobile

Great place to eat and shop in Ottawa. A nice walk around the heart of old Ottawa. Fresh food, restaurants, and street artists.

This is such a fun area to explore. There are some great pubs and restaurants along with the actual market stall area.

“Walk”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Tip: fresh and fairly priced fruit.

This is a nice area to take a walk. There are several stands selling fruits, veggies and syrup. It looks very local and sustainable.

“Lots of options to eat”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

There are many, many options for food and entertainment in the market - be sure to wander down the various streets to see all the shops and restaurants, not just the main ones.

“More shops than you can imagine!”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

We toured the fresh market stalls and were surprised to see such low prices for a 'tourist' place. We found lots of cool t-shirts and touristy trinkets for everyone in the family. Even just people watching was a lot of fun - plan a whole day to see everything.
