Rideau Centre bills itself as Ottawa's premier shopping destination. If it is then all the other malls must be pretty pathetic.
The mall - which dates to 1983 - has seen very little upgrading which counts for it's very tired look. It just doesn't feel upscale with the wall-to-wall beige tones. The mall is also sadly lacking many stores you would expect. Yes, it does have an Apple outlet but where is the Victoria's Secret, H&M, J. Crew, Pottery Barn, etc., etc. For a city of Ottawa's size and supposed wealth we were very disappointed by what it had to ofer. Even the "local" stores served up just the usual tacky souvenirs or merchandise.
However, the future is looking bright. The owners have announced a $250 million upgrade/expansion which will bring a Nordstrom store (which replaces a depressingly bad Sears store - the only department store in the mall - The Bay is next door and pre-dates the mall by decades!) and a much mproved look. The work is supposed to be completed by 2015.
