“High Quality Installations and it's FREE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2014

I had been several times previously and this was as good as the previous times. The permanent collection is not massive, but contains representative pieces of high quality of numerous styles, eras, and genres.

This time there was an exhibit of John Ruskin drawings that was absolutely breathtaking. This alone was worth a journey.

Group of Seven Paintings? Fabulous! Dutch Masters? Great. Modern Art? High Quality.

I spent half a day and had been before. Given the permanent collections are free, you don't have to feel guilty if you don't spend lots of time. Pick an era or genre and focus on that.

Construction is underway (February 2014) which detracted slightly.

Free coat check and WONDERFUL gift/book shop with tasteful objects at ALL price ranges.

Worth a journey.

“Best art gallery in the country”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2014

The permanent collection, focused on Canada and Europe, is the best in the country. The collection of Inuit works is also splendid. The special exhibition of Canadian art and architecture, 1890-1918, was our reason for going to Ottawa, and it was almost everything my wife and I had hoped for. I say "almost" because there was too little attention given to British Columbia, and more particularly to the work of Francis Mawson Rattenbury, in many ways the most interesting architect active in the province 100+ years ago. Never mind: even without him it was an exhibition well worth seeing.

It was delightful to hear Janet Cardiff's 40-part Motet in the Rideau Chapel. Her version of Tallis's Spem in Alium, using 40 separate speakers, each presenting a voice, has thrilled me every time I've heard it. We had a wonderful few hours.

“Don't missit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2014

This one is good, as befits the National Museum.
There is stunning indigenous art, and the permanent displays show a good representation of the country.
There are world class temporary exhibitions too.

“A treat for the eyes and ears.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2014

This was my second trip to the National Gallery of Canada and I found new exhibits that I missed the first time around, and a wonderful new exhibit of sound that resonated with me. They have reconstructed a chapel and have beautiful choral music coming out of a circle of small speakers, absolutely beautiful to sit and spend a quite moment or two being lost in the sounds.
