Great for adults, but not so for kids. Very well spaced out museum with a great collection of art pieces. Unfortunately there is no barrier to the art pieces and kids sometimes got too close to them and the security personnel will remind you to back off!

I visited the museum mid-morning on one of the coldest days of the winter so far. As there are currently no blockbuster special exhibits on however, 4 or 5 very thoughtful, and well curated ones, it was a good time to visit , and I had the museum almost to myself. Was not impressed with the food and service in the cafeteria, however, as was pretty basic, and not up to scratch for our National Gallery. The main hall is currently under constructions, as well as some major overhauls in the front court with Giant spider called MAMAN. Wondered what happened to the baby spider.

Just outside the museum you'll find this huge spider, at first sight it's weird to understand why a not very loved creature has so much importance, beautiful concept.

The architecture alone is worth the visit. The exhibits change regularly and it is worth repeat visits. I would suggest you call ahead and try to arrange to have a guided tour. You will be overwhelmed in about two hours so if you want to cruise the entire gallery plan on making two trips.

The National Gallery buliding is worth a visit in itself, a glass structure referencing the shape of the Basilica across the street, with wonderful views of the Ottawa River and the Parliament Buildings. There are often wonderful travelling exhibitions of (mostly) major artists from Canada and around the world. The permanent collection houses a canadian gallery, where my favourite paintings are (look for the school board meeting, with the young teacher standing up to the old trustees, works by Prudence Heward, Pegi Nicol McLeod, as well as the better known Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven). There is now, finally, a gallery devoted to Canadian Aboriginal and Inuit art, which as formerly only shown as cultural objects in the Civilization Museum. There is a good European collection as well. Unfortunately, there are not many people around to guide people and explain the work. There are so many stories untold. The cafeteria is okay, unfortunately, the better cafe is now closed. The shop is excellent.
