“A Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

There's a lot of history tied up in the Rideau Canal. It was built to allow troops to bypass the St. Lawrence River in the event America was to invade Canada. We didn't invade and the canal remains. It is a great place to stroll along, or sit on a bench and chill out. I've only been to Ottawa in the Spring and Summer, but the canal becomes the world's longest ice skating rink in the winter. I will skate here some day.

Nice walk by pretty canal and locks. Great views over river whichever way you walk. Chipmunks and squirrels running around.

“Hire and bike to take in the views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014

We hired bikes from the shop just across from the canal locks - go down the steps and it is hidden under the arches.

The best way to quickly experience the canal has to be by cycling - there is a purpose prepared track which takes you all the way from the centre of town to the Hogs Back falls which is worth a stop (especially if the rain has been heavy recently).

You can then continue to follow the river back into Ottawa.

“Well-maintained”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

Beautiful walking path (nicer on the east side of the canal). Boat tours at a reasonable price. Frequent bridges but never one at the exact spot you need it! Fun to see pleasure craft of all sizes plying the canal. There are several cafes along the way, including one at the Somerset bridge with an adult-size sandbox with lawn chairs to simulate beach. Please frequent this since it took a decade and hundreds of lives to build!
