Nice views, and paths for walking, biking, jogging. Especially this time of year. Nice side of Ottawa.

The Rideau Canal is a beautiful spot to visit, and fun to see when the locks are in use by boaters. When there aren't any boats passing through, you can walk over the canal where the locks are. There is also a bicycle path along both the river and canal which offers great views of the city. Where the canal meets Dow's Lake, there are a few restaurants and you can rent boats there as well. Lovely place to spend a relaxing afternoon.

From downtown Ottawa, I was able to run a loop through to Gatineau, back to Ottawa and continue along the Rideau canal for 14 kms. Longer distances are do-able as well. Early Saturday morning saw a handful of runners and cyclists but the trail seemed to get busier as the day progressed.
My hope is to get back to skate on the canal in winter.

Bike along the canal, bring your own kayaks or rent ones. We Kayaked from Dow's lake to the parliament buildings. It was a beautiful hour ride to the center of town. I would highly recommend it!

If you take your family for a walk along the Rideau Locks, only will you get to enjoy an interesting scientific expedition, getting an up close look at how engineers have solved the problem of joining two waterways of different heights, in this case, the Rideau and the Ottawa, but also a piece of history -- these are the oldest continuously operating locks in North America and have been named a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The area is naturally beautiful and has been attractively landscaped. It lies nestled Parliament's East Block and the Chateau Laurier Hotel. After your (mild) exertions clambering up and down the locks system, you may want to visit the Terrace restaurant of the Chateau Laurier, which overlooks the locks, and have a drink as the sun goes down.
