Owner description: One of the oldest landmarks in Ottawa, this canal is filled with boats in the summer and becomes the "World's Longest Skating Rink" in the winter.

Growing up near Ottawa, skating on the Rideau canal was something I did often as a kid. This year I passed the tradition on to my boys and they loved it. There is nothing like lacing up the skates on a beautifuly, sunny winter day and skating through the nation's capital. The ice quality was terrific thanks to the wonderful staff at the NCC. And the Beavertails were a tasty treat at the end of our skate.

7.8 kilometres of skating each way. We did the whole length and back in one afternoon. It's so much more fun than skating around in circles at a rink. You need to watch your feet and be careful of cracks. Go early in the day to have better ice. Stalls with soup and Beaver tails several places along the route. Beautiful ice sculptures at the park at the beginning of the ice way. There are several places to access the canal that would probably give free parking roadside on the weekend.

Doesn't matter if you can skate or not...if you are in Ottawa in the winter time you HAVE to check out the Rideau Canal! It is an amazing experience and will bring a smile to your face to be out on the ice whether on skates or boots and be a part of this Ottawa tradition. We layered up in the minus 20 weather, laced on our skates and became part of the massive crowd enjoying the Canal on Family Day. There are tons of access points to get to the surface of the ice, plenty of benches to put on skates or give yourself a break, warming huts, port-a-potties, and the ubiquitous Ottawa Beavertail sellers! I'm so happy we weren't scared off by the freezing temperatures...I feel even more like a true Canadian!

Winter or summer, tourist or resident, the Ridea Canal is a destination to be enjoyed. In winter, of course, you can skate its length especially as part of the Winterlude Festival. I enjoy it most in summer when you can either have a great walk along any portion, or bicycle (rented if necessary) the whole length. I especially like the northern part, opposite Carleton University, where there are plenty of paths along it as part of the Arboretum. The highlight would be the portion starting at the Hogsback locks where the rocky falls are impressive in spring. And we must not forget the May Tulip Festival where the tulip beds at Dow's Lake are spectacular.
