This timeless wonder never ceases to amaze. Regardless of the season, it's the heart of Ottawa and unfailingly beautiful.

This is our second time going to Winterlude with two of our nieces and we have a blast. Since both families are from out of town, we go on the weekend and meet at the Greenboro Park and Ride (South Keys Mall) and catch the O-train to Carling, where we get off and head over to Dow's Lake and have breakfast at Malone's (we make reservations on-line). Then we check out a few of the events at Dow's Lake and then hop on the OC Transpo Sno-Bus to Confederation Park and transfer onto the STO Sno-Bus to Jacques-Cartier Park for the slides and other activities there. We then grab lunch and a Beavertail and eat in the seating area inside. Once finished, we hop back on the STO Sno-Bus and head back to Confederation Park to check out the Ice Sculptures and maybe grab another Beavertail :-) . Then we hop back on the OC Transpo Sno-Bus to go back to Dow's Lake and then the O-Train back to Greenboro.

On one of the other weekends, my wife and I will usually head down by ourselves and have breakfast at the Wild Oat Bakery Cafe in The Glebe and then head down to the canal for a skate along the 7.8km stretch down to Dow's Lake and back... grabbing a Beavertail (or two) along the way.

There is really nothing else like it in the world! Between the skating, hot chocolate and beaver tails, you will have a wonderful time on the canal.

If you want a cheap fun way to spend your weekend this is the place for you. If you want to really do some good quality skating be sure to head out early and avoid the crowds. Have a beavertail and spend the day in the sunshine.

There's a 100 character minimum for reviews. Can I just write 'awesome' 13 times?

We went to Ottawa for a special birthday weekend for my 8YO son. We had two main activities planned; skating on the canal, and the Sens-Jets game. We spent Saturday morning on the canal and had a blast. I've done this a few times, but it was my son's first time skating the canal and he loved it. We started by the Rideau Centre, and skated to the Beavertails kiosk near Fifth Avenue. We stopped there for a break, and a snack of Beavertails and hot chocolate. There's even an ATM on the ice if you're not packing cash. Had we not had tickets to the Sens game that afternoon, I think we might have spent most of the day skating. It was fantastic.

What a great attraction this is. There are heated washrooms, warm buildings where you can change into your skates and store your boots, places to get hot drinks and snacks. If you are going to Ottawa and you like to skate, pack your skates and head for the canal. You won't regret it.
