“Delightful and delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014

On Thursday, July 10th, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Play. The small plate menu is most interesting, and each bite was pure enjoyment. Attention to detail and flavour was evident. Our server Erin was outstanding, and guided us through the menu, with intelligent conversation about flavours and wine pairings. Excellent value, 2 plates for $22 lunch special. Absolutely outstanding. No doubt that we will return the next time we visit Ottawa.

“Playful cuisine that delights & surprises each time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2014

As Ottawans, Play is our absolute favourite restaurant in the city, and probably the world. That may sound like hyperbole but we love how different the food is each time we visit and are always surprised and delighted by the combinations of flavours and textures that they come up with. Every outing is a unique experience, and the staff always go out of their way to make it even more so. The menu is changed up every two weeks (we think) so you'll always get something different, although the hanger steak with frites and aioli is always a reliable choice.

The last time we visited, we brought some out-of-town visitors travelling throughout North America who were pleasantly surprised with their meal and said it was one of the best they'd had during their trip. We had a really amazing scallop dish and even ordered seconds of it. The charcuterie and cheese offerings are always great and local, and we've always liked whatever blue cheese they offer. There's a very extensive wine cellar and we're always able to find something to like. Perhaps the only area that isn't always outstanding is the dessert selection, which we usually find is good but not always exciting.

Play also offers pretty good value for what is essentially a fine dining experience in a more casual setting - while small plates may not be for everyone, we're pretty big eaters and are more often than not satisfied after ordering 3 small plates, a 3-cheese plate and/or charcuterie, which usually comes up to less than $100 for 2 people (including a 2oz tasting glass of wine).

Just be aware of what type of restaurant it is and you won't be disappointed: Play is best enjoyed by sharing several plates between you, rather than as a traditional meal where you each get your own entree. A great restaurant in the heart of the downtown core - not to be missed if you visit the Canadian capital!

“Little plates - big flavour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2014

This was was first time at Plat Food and Wine and it was very enjoyable. This is a "small plate" concept restaurant so you need to order a couple of options and you can't go wrong with any choice. Our table had a number of different items and shared around - all was great. Great wine list and a good selection of craft beer and draft. A very enjoyable meal.

“Perfect place to celebrate!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

After my first day at a new job my partner took me here for dinner and drinks. It was a great place to celebrate! Service was excellent, everyone was so friendly. The charcuterie and cheese plates were excellent with some nice wine. We ended up sharing the boar sausage (with a great sauerkraut), frites, cauliflower, pork belly (my favourite!). All were delicious, although we both felt like the dishes could have been a little more adventurous...mixed in some unexpected flavours perhaps.

Also, gluten-free friendly. The server even took the menu back to the kitchen and marked what I could and couldn't have and then explained the options.

Would definitely recommend.

“Expensive and pretty average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

My wife and I went based on the excellent Trip Advisor ratings and came away underwhelmed. The service was great - we came without lunch reservations and a baby in a stroller and the waitresses removed some chairs and had us seated quickly near the front of the restaurant. We had steak frites, boar sausage, gnocchi, and scallops. The steak frites had excellent flavor but were chewy. The sausage was very good - kind of like a regular sausage without the fat - but $11 for a sausage is a bit much. The gnocchi was not suited to our tastes and there were only 3 small but good scallops. I think a night with group of friends drinking and sampling unique foods would be great here, but as a couple looking for great food based on the reviews we were a bit disappointed.
