Loved the venue on the edge of the Byward Market. Very good service with strong attention and knowledge of wines. We were there on the early side and we saw it was going to fill quickly so if you can go early or certainly reservations will be needed.

A great selection of tasting plates - all are good size - our party of 3 ordered our own fave then split an order of scallops. Steak and frites: steak was very tender and done to order, frites crispy. Salad was very tasty indeed. Shared a dessert: pear crisp with a background of blue cheese served with lemon sorbet.

Recommend to all.

This was my second visit to Play. Last year I visited when the place was virtually taken over by a large group that kept growing as the evening went on. Other patrons were annoyed but staff only indulged the rowdy behaviour in this supposedly upscale resto.

I went back to Play with an old friend to try it again. On the plus side the place was more quiet. Staff told me they no longer allow large groups unless the whole floor is booked.

The food is fresh and carefully prepared. Good selection of beer and interesting suggested pairings for food and wine. The chorizo is very good. The pruiscutto is appropriately on the dry side but lacks flavour. Skirt steak is very tender and tasty. The gnocchi is good but a bit 'clumpy'. I really enjoyed the roasted pumpkin salad.

Unfortunately the menu has not changed much since my last visit. It should really turn over more frequently. The waiter said the skirt steak is their most popular item. That may signal not only a good dish but also the need for more hot meat dishes. I would be curious what inspired ideas they could put to work with duck breast--- an ideal addition to a small plates menu.

So, while I will continue to recommend people give Play a try, I will want to be certain of more variety and menu renewal before I head back there myself. Two drinks and 5 plates, with tip, was about $90 for dinner.

If you love great food, this is the place for lunch at the very heart of Ottawa. The cuisine is very tasty and imaginative. At $ 20 for two small plates, this is an outstanding bargain for the quality of the food served. The wine selection is limited but decent and the servings are generous. The place was very busy when we went and the service and general ambiance suffered somewhat. Nevertheless, it was a great experience.

If your idea of great dining is the mile long huge buffet - this isn't the place for you. This is intimate dining over well prepared small plates. It is great wine, great cheese plates, well prepared food over intimate conversation. Great place for two couples to enjoy and evening.

Because of the tasting plates, it gives you a great variety of things to try. Great service as well!
