Visited this restaurant with a family member. Had done our research, so we knew what to expect in terms of the menu, etc. Decided to do the wine pairing as well, to have the full experience. Very glad we did. Food as art is an understatement, and there was great attention to detail. Some portions would have little accents -- spices, herbs, mousse - which each changed the flavour of the dish in question. Some favourites - a light & airy foie gras, cool and creamy with accompanying accents, a delicious crab with lemon, the quirky beer & nachos (which, if I remember correctly, was beer heated, which formed into crispy swirls, served over a bed of powdery peppers, spices, cheese & sour cream.) Other dishes included squid and elk, as well as the hilarious "area 59" dessert. The wine pairings - from a light prosecco to an excellent barolo with an english oaky beer to change things up - were interesting and thoughtfully explained. It's a marathon experience -- very enjoyable, and one I would definitely do again.

Atelier is difficult to find -- its located in a VERY non descript almost ugly old house in an office/ industrial patch off Carling Avenue. The food served here is the exact opposite of the drab location: every dish was a wonderful surprise served in a novel way on Atelier's custom made dishes (and once on a piece of sea washed granite). While food descriptions sound like this place is only for the adventurous, my kinda picky husband and friend thoroughly enjoyed the many many fabulous courses. Wine pairings are superb as well.
Atelier needs to fix two problems to be perfect: (1) seating is crowded and the dining space very small and (2) the restaurant gets too hot as the evening goes on, even on a chilly winter night.

This restaurant is well worth every penny. All the dishes were presented beautifully and they also had my favourite wine too. We all had the flights of wine with the dinner. At $88pp and $55 for the wine flights it was very reasonable. One slight criticism was the chocolate brownie on the last plate(would have preferred a mousse) a tiny bit to heavy a dish at that stage. Will return next time in Ottawa.

I had been quite curious to try Atelier for some time despite the high price. There is no menu and the large array of courses flow at a good rate. So far so good. Unfortunately, I wasn't all that impressed with the average course. They ranged from excellent in a couple of cases, to bad in a couple of others (the flavour mixes just didn't seem to work for me). The rest were interesting but not all that enjoyable. Presentation is amazing. I was not all that impressed with the service and was a little frustrated at all the long descriptions of anything.. like, do I really need to know that the drizzle of butterscotch was made with 15 year old single-malt whiskey?

It's a little bit expensive, but it's an experience you will never forget. I have been twice, and was so amazed at what they do with the food that is presented to you both times. The staff are really friendly, a little bit uptight though. You need to go see this type of art meets food experience.
