Disappointed in general by the choice of food and the standard of cooking in the restaurants on Queen St in NOTL, it was a real delight to walk in to the Charles Inn and be served a genuinely good meal in a lovely setting. This place unlike many others on Queen's street isn't trying to be something and make a statement, it JUST IS. The Charles Inn has a timeless quality about it and the food is understatedly refined in a very European way. The baby green salad was ultra fresh and was perfectly dressed. The crisp skin Atlantic salmon was exquisitely done and the duck confit grilled cheese was an interesting variation of a croque monsieur was bold and delicious. In general the service was attentive but lacked nuance which such an establishment deserves. The Inn should also invest in a proper espresso machine. The huge bodum coffee pot with not so good quality coffee was the only let down to an otherwise excellent dining experience.

our waiter was a bit pretentious. The appetiser was mysterious.Scallop tartar looked like sushi and tasted like tasteless rubber.

Had the table d'hôte - would highly recommend if looking to splurge for an evening. Scallops and foie gras were the highlights. Service was excellent, of course!

After reading all the rave reviews, we were looking forward to trying this restaurant.

The ambience and service were excellent but unfortunately the food was disappointing.

We ordered the gazpacho and foie gras as appetizers and had the pork and salmon for the mains. Unfortunately the foie gras was burned and cold on the inside the first time they served it. They were nice enough to want to try to correct it but the second time they served it, it was burned again and the texture of the foie gras wasn't very good -- quite "vein"-y. The gazpacho was good though. The main courses were decent but not what we expected (I guess we had higher expectations). We also found out that it was the chef's night off so maybe that was a contributing factor.

The service was excellent and we enjoyed the ambience. Unfortunately, we aren't likely to return because of the quality and value of the food.

Fortunately for the restaurant, it seems like our experience is just a one-off.

We ate in the lounge and had a very pleasant meal with friendly attentive service in nice surroundings for a very reasonable price. What's not to like?!
