“Very good - Way to expensive”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

The food was excellent, the service excellent. We did the wine pairing dinner, but the portions were very small. The waiter had told us that they were half the size of a regular serving, but they were definitely smaller. The wine was also less than I expected. Only about a third of a regular glass of wine. So at the end, when we got our bill with tip already added on at 20% and the cost was $360 for 2 with no added expenses to the bill aside from tax, I felt a bit cheated. The wine and dinner were not worth $180 a person.

“Comfortable, intimate, but average”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

We walked up to the Charles Inn from where we were staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel in NOTL. It is at the north end of one of the most beautiful villages in North America. The flowers and landscaping along Queen Street combined with the historic architecture create a sense of place like no other and is a must-visit location that should be on everybody's "bucket list". We stopped in the Charles Inn pub room for a drink, but decided to stay for a light bite. We had the small, intimate bar to ourselves. The waitress put two tables together to seat four and changed the TV so that we could watch the men's final of the US Open Tennis. The leather lounge chairs were soooo comfortable and the setting was very intimate. We ordered off of the pub menu which had a broad range of selections....except for the wine menu. The wine menu offered only Canadian wines. While Canadian wine production is centered in NOTL and has come a long way in the last 25 years, in this reviewers eyes it is second class to many other regions of the world and signified a limited perspective on the part of management. Our meals were good, but not great. One of the dishes came with an indiscernible garnish that was bitter. The waitress had no idea what it was and called the manager. He actually used his fingers to pick some off the plate and taste it....and had no idea what it was?? Finally they consulted the chef and were told that the garnish was... chicken of the woods mushrooms??? None of us have ever heard of it and my wife is a gourmet cook. Look it up on Google...about 10% of the population is allergic to this fungi. Long story short, the food was only average. The bill for a beet salad, shepard's pie, burger and three glasses of wine was $102CDN.

“Lunch in Niagara on the Lake”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

We had lunch at the Charles Inn as part of a winery tour package. Unfortunately our lunch was the worst part of the day long activities. Because we were part of a package deal we had a limited selection of luncheon items and the full menu was not make available to us. The macaroni and cheese was boring and overpowered but the taste of garlic. The pulled pork sandwich had lemon chiffon spread that just did not compliment the sandwich. The accompanying French fries looked good but were undercooked. Overall we did not enjoy our visit to The Charles Inn and would not consider going back.

“Lovely and delicious!”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

We are three who often visit Notl, but have never had the pleasure of the fine dining at the Charles Inn Restaurant. Our meal was among the best we have ever eaten in this lovely resort town. From entrees to dessert our food and service couldn't have been better. Though the atmosphere and service are beautiful "old school," food preparation showed updated elegance. Can't wait to return!

“Excellent dinner”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

We didn't have a reservation and hoped to sit outside in the charming patio area, however, a sprinkle prevented us from doing so. The staff was very accommodating and seated us in the bar. Delicious meal. Hope to return next season and this will definitely be on our go to list.
