Ben Brae-on-the-Park
Reviewed July 14, 2011

We had a delightful time with Dave and Lynda. They knew so much about the area and directed us to all of the spots we wanted to see. Breakfast each morning was wonderful: homemade goodies along with great conversation. We also had the small room downstairs but found it cozy and charming. We would highly recommend staying here!

The family get-together for the weekend was fantastic except for the room at Ben Brae. We ended up in the small room on the lower lever. This room is approximately 8' x 8', smaller than a walk-in closet. It must have been a small study when the house was originally built. The bed fills the entire room and leaves little room to walk within. There is a small closet, but the door does not even open fully to allow one to store their suitcase. The room is so small that when you try to sleep it feels as if the walls are closing in on you. To make matters worse, the shower was also miniature. You constantly hit your elbows on the walls. Note - this is coming from a person who is only 5 foot tall!

We immediately made reservations for our second night at another place in town and when we tried to just pay for the first night we were told payment would still be required for two nights, which was disappointing.

The breakfast was unremarkable. We had informed the host we did not eat dairy, which includes yogurt, milk, cheese and butter. None the less we were served fresh fruit smothered in yogurt, and egg and herb (?) omelet, and toast smothered in metled butter. Coffee was available as long as you only wanted a cup.

All in all, one deserves to stay in a proper room. This felt more like a punishment. Would not recommend this to anyone.

Management response:Responded June 25, 2012

Our unhappy, claustrophobic guest arrived early. She viewed the house and room she had requested and seemed fine with her choice. It was not until the following morning that we heard she wanted a larger room and shower ( the shower is a standard sized shower ) . We immediately tried to accommodate her request but she wanted to move to a hotel. The rest of the party were embarrassed by her behaviour and we spoke no more of it, until this review appeared. It is unfortunate to hear of an unhappy experieince but there was an effort to make this guest comfortable and happy. Breakfasts are tasty, varied and we do not dump yoghurt on guest's fruit. We went on to enjoy the rest of the party and felt sad that this lady did not want to return to breakfast with her friends the following day.

Dave and Lynda were wonderful, attentive hosts who made us feel like old friends come to visit. Their home is beautiful, and even though our beautifully-appointed room on the main floor was small, we had full access to the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The backyard was a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area. I would definitely recommend this place. If you're willing to spend a little more, the upstairs room are lovely and much larger. We were given lots of information on the village and trips to Niagara falls. It was an easy walk to the village area and a 20-minutes drive to the Falls.
