“Marvelous, simply marvelous.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2009

When I consider our three nights at the Britaly Bed and Breakfast, the word which keeps coming to mind is “marvelous.” This is true in terms of alternative definitions in Merriam-Webster: “causing wonder” and “of the highest kind or quality: notably superior.”

The location is a bit unusual: Britaly B & B is in a newer subdivision away from downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake. We were a bit worried about transportation to the theaters and parking. However, this was not an issue. With Aldo’s suggestions, we attended six plays in three days at all three theaters and had no problems finding comfortable parking.

The house is not what you would expect. Rather than the traditional aging Victorian, it is relatively new construction, a good sized, attractive suburban house in an attractive neighborhood. It has a small, unobtrusive sign over the garage. The most significant hint that this is not a normal suburban home is the beautiful flower garden and other plantings in the front yard.

Once you enter the house, you know immediately that this is something special. It is beautifully furnished, with paintings, artistically arranged plates on the walls, and exquisite yet comfortable furniture. In back is a comfortable deck, and a restful garden full of flowering plants surrounding a fish pond.

There are three bedrooms in the house. We stayed in the English Room, with a queen-sized four poster bed, a love seat and a Queen Ann chair, satellite TV (which we never bothered to turn on), a fireplace, and a large en suite bath. The furnishings are beautiful and well arranged.

Downstairs there is a front sitting room available for the use of guests. Ask Aldo or Graham, our hosts, for the story of the British Admiral whose painting is above the fireplace.

Next to the sitting room is a beautiful (sorry to overuse that word, but there’s no other way to describe it) dining room with a formal dining table for six. Breakfast is served at 8:45 a.m. I am normally a bacon and eggs type, and avoid anything sophisticated. Nevermore.

Breakfast started each day with juice, coffee, or tea, as you preferred. This was followed by Graham’s homemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit. The granola, sprinkled on top of the yogurt with fresh strawberries and/or blueberries was delicious. I didn’t realize that yogurt could taste so good. I could live on nothing but the granola, yogurt and fruit.

At this point Graham or Aldo would bring out the fresh muffins, straight from the oven. The first day we had peach muffins; the second day, raisin and date muffins; the third day, peanut butter muffins.

The breakfast closed with a hot dish. Day 1: baked eggs with mushrooms over polenta; day 2: puff pastry ricotta cheese and spinach; and day 3: eggs on a cloud over cinnamon French toast.

Aldo and Graham are courteous and helpful to the extreme. They had suggestions as to restaurants, the plays, and, most importantly, parking. When my wife asked if she could take photographs of the large sunflowers in a vase in the kitchen, Aldo moved them into the dining room where the light would be better and she and he spent an hour moving them around, mixing them with different props from the house and taking pictures.

Coffee and tea were available in the mornings outside the bedrooms, as well as a small refrigerator in which guests could place items. For those who wish to sit outside, there is a deck with chairs overlooking the flower garden and Koi pond.

After staying in many B & Bs, resort hotels and standard hotels, I have never been provided better service, better facilities or more courteous treatment than at the Britaly. We are already planning our return.

We just returned from Niagara on the Lake and our stay at the Britaly b and b. We loved the whole experience! We have not stayed in a b and b in many years and were unsure how we would feel about it. It was wonderful! Aldo and Graham are charming hosts, who are helpful in sharing information about the area, including good restaurant ideas and which winery's to visit. They even gave us cards for free tastings. Their home is delightful. We stayed in the Italian room. It was small but immaculate. The bathroom was charming. The home is spotless. The breakfasts were fabulous and plentiful. We loved the puff pastry with ricotta and spinach ,and eggs on a cloud and the granola-and yogurt with fruit- did I mention the muffins-wow! We also loved the turn down service-including chocolate and the morning coffee outside the bedrooms before breakfast. What a beautiful area to visit and staying here made it even better!

Our stay at Britaly greatly enhanced our visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Aldo and Graham are gracious and attentive hosts who not run only a spotlessly clean and comfortable home, but who are able to create a wonderful experience for their guests.

First of all let me say what charming hosts Aldo and Graham are, rightly proud of their wonderful home with its beautiful garden.

Not having stayed in B&B's for a long time we were a little nervous (thoughts of archetypal English seaside landladies I guess)…. but what a pleasant surprise….

We stayed for two nights in the English room and it was perfect, a lovely bed, sitting area with a view over the garden and an en suite bathroom. The room, as was the rest of the house, was immaculate.

The Breakfast is an experience not to be missed, with their fabulous home cooking. The helpings were plentiful with a quality that we have rarely, if ever, tasted before for breakfast but didn’t leave us feeling like we had overeaten, leaving us ready for the day ahead.

Niagara on the Lake was a breath of fresh air after our hectic agenda at Niagara Falls. The town itself was charming with interesting shops, some great value restaurants (recommended by Aldo and Graham) and enjoyable visits to local wineries. Its worth looking out for free vouchers for tasting if you visit more than one winery in the same group.

Just book and experience for yourself….you won’t be disappointed

Entering the town is already an experience: lovely scenery, spectacular views of the river and then driving into the quiet neighbourhood. You have to look a little for Britaly (there are no huge sign posts or anythng like that, therefore the picture is added) but once you step into the house, it is like stepping into another (wonderful) world.
The house is beautifully decorated and everything has been done with care. Aldo and Graham show you around the house and garden with great pride, and this is very understable. The rooms upstairs are also very nicely furnitured. We stayed with our 3 childeren so had the entire floor to ourselves.
We enjoyed a drink in the garden and all the tips (about the Falls and restaurants, the village and the possible routes to drive) were well appreciated.
We felt very much at home and thoroughly enjoyed our 2 days.
We strongly recommend Britaly to anyone looking for a nice place to stay and enjoying a proper breakfast! The breakfast was just amazing!! Go there and see for yourself!!
Aldo and Graham, thanks for your hospitality and we hope to return some day.

We stayed in the Italian Ensuite. The room was small but very well arranged, and the bathroom was cute. The B&B is very clean - immaculate, in fact - with warm, elegant decor. Graham and Aldo were very welcoming. The breakfast was so yummy. We've bragged about "eggs on a cloud" to everyone we know. Great place. I have already recommended it to friends and family.

Aldo and Graham are the quintessential hosts at a beautiful B and B in Niagara-on-the-Lake. They are charming and know what the region has to offer. They offer a clean and comfortable place to stay with awesome breakfasts. Gourmet eating with an old world charm. They are conveniently located by a beautiful trail as well as the downtown. Shaw Festival goers and the many restaurants are a few minutes walk away and the regions many wineries are easily accessible by car. If you are looking for something for the garden, wine for the home or friends, or locally made cheeses, your hosts can direct you to the best places.
