“Can't possible be a better B&B in NOTL”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

Spent weekend @ Merlot House and our 3rd visit is more evidence that the McBrides are hosts extraordinaire. Mike's breakfasts continue to be superb. Shirley's special touches are everywhere, with the three mothers receiving a gift @ their Mother's Day breakfast. We can't believe there is a better B&B. Great sleeps with the windows open and the birds singing in Shirley's garden. We will be back.

We stayed here for a night in April, and couldn't have felt more taken care of. The house was immaculate and the hosts were very welcoming. Our room, the Merlot room was large, with a king four poster bed and a comfortable arm chair. It also had a great en-suite bathroom with a large jacuzzi tub. The hosts arranged a wine tour for us, as well as took care of dinner reservations at a great farm to table restaurant in town. The following morning they made a multiple course breakfast of fresh fruit, freshly baked scones, and oatmeal blueberry pancakes. We would highly recommend the Merlot House to anyone looking to get away from it all for a weekend. You will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: The Merlot room is definitely the best room in the house.

We stayed for one night at this lovely B&B in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The owners were very helpful and made us feel at home. The room was very clean and cozy.
The breakfast was nice too. We'll definitely stay again.

A return visit to Merlot House

It's September 22, 2013. We spent our wedding anniversary staying three nights at Merlot House to see some Shaw Festival plays. For logistical reasons, we hadn't been to this B&B since last year. It remains a great place. The Merlot Room is still their best accommodation: king - size bed, comfy linen, nice sitting area with fireplace, and, of course, the jacuzzi tub. It is all tastefully decorated, and everything was in good working condition.

Every night, we'd relax in the tub, enjoying some local wine, and nibbling on some chocolate that our hosts had put out for us. Breakfast was different every day. We ate fresh peaches on day one. We needed an early morning breakfast on day two to accommodate the Director's Project's ten a.m. curtain time. Mike and Shirley were happy to oblige. So for the first day of autumn, Mike prepared a poached pear and apple combo. The third day, we had a fresh fruit salad. Mike gets all his fruit locally, when in season. Of course, meeting interesting people is what B&Bs are all about. On days one and two, we breakfasted with two nurses who were traveling to a fiftieth class reunion. On day three, we enjoyed the company of a Hamilton couple who were also celebrating their wedding anniversary. Mike and Shirley went beyond the call of duty at the end of that breakfast. They presented each couple with a small chocolate hazelnut cake topped with a large chocolate medallion wishing us a happy anniversary in white icing. Now that is what makes Merlot House so special.

Additional information worth knowing:

Every aspect of the house is beautifully appointed.
Delivery of services is flawless.
Parking is right outside the front door.
You can relax in their backyard.
The butler's pantry on the main floor has a bar fridge stocked with soft drinks, as well as milk and cream for coffee and tea.
The downtown theaters, as well as the Festival Theater, are an easy 20 to 30 minute walk, on quiet, tree-lined sidewalks.

For first time B&B guests, it's exactly what you would want your accommodation to be like.

We stayed for 2 nights. The house was spotless. Room spacious. Great hostess. Excellent breakfast. We were visiting to see the christmas lights in the Falls which were spectacular. Bring good rain gear for the spray from the Falls.
Also enjoyed going to U.S. side for a different perspective, Goat Island is worth a visit.
We hiked " The Glen" along the Parkway, great trails.
So even in Dec. we found lots to do. The main street NOTL was very festive.
Some of the light displays on private homes along the Parkway were amazing.

I found Merlot House B&B through a quick search of tripadvisor. Typically I do not like B&B's and prefer to stay in hotels. I often find B&B's are old homes, cluttered with old crap. I found Merlot House to be very modern and clean, with very minimal amounts of "clutter" which I often think of when I think of B&B's. I found Mike and Shirley to be very helpful and nice, but also were not overbearing and gave us our space. Next time we go to NOTL we will definitely return to Merlot House and not even bother looking for another location.

This is our 3rd or 4th year returning to this B&B. Shirley and Mike are fantastic hosts, always looking to meet your needs. It's a wonderful location to attend plays at the Shaw Festival and/or the many wineries located nearby. The home is very comfortable, wireless works great!, and the breakfast's a culinary treat. We love staying in their Merlot Suite with the jacuzzi tub, fireplace with 4-poster bed, and comfortable sitting area. Don't miss being 'spoiled' by your stay here.

Room Tip: We just love the Merlot suite!
