“Lovely home. Great hosts”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

My husband and and I recently stayed at Merlot House at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Our hosts were extremely gracious and generous. The room was lovely and inviting. Our hosts, Mike and Shirley, have a beautiful home and the location is ideal. It's two minutes away from Queen Street, the main shopping strip. Breakfast was delicious and bountiful, the rates are very reasonable and Mike and Shirley welcome you like long lost friends. We would definitely recommend Merlot House to anyone looking for a quiet and lovely bed and breakfast. There are three beautiful and spacious rooms to choose from. You won't be disappointed.

Great Location, Great People, Great Food, Great B&B!!! Both hosts have made our most enjoyable. It was my first experience with the Family in a B&B and we all enjoyed the hospitality of the owners. It was recommended to me me and I now highly recommend it myself. Both rooms were perfect for my wife and I and our two teen age daughters who enjoyed their first experience in a B&B and already want to return to Merlot house next year. The Manor style house, their rooms and the decor of the Merlot House is charming and beautiful and it has a beautiful collection of paintings and art collection from around the world. Thanks to the McBrides for making our stay in Niagara-on the -Lake the best part of our Ontario trip.

Didn't think it was possible to better our last stay, but Mike and Shirley did. First time our 23rd yr old twin son and daughter stayed and Shaw Twin Suite was perfect for them. We were attending a family wedding. Shirley was waiting for our arrival as she knew we needed to quickly change for the ceremony. She graciously offered us the unoccupied third suite bathroom, an example of them going the extra mile and making their guests feel special. We didn't need it as we were prepared for a quick turnaround, however we really appreciated the offer. Fruit and cheese was offered to hold our appetites until after the ceremony. Another perfect touch. Breakfast was red and white to honour Canada Day, both the amazing 2 courses that Mike cooked and the decor that Shirley created. Our stay was too short so the four of us are planning a return stay later this year to celebrate hubby/daddy's birthday and bike to some wineries. B &B is a no brainer as Merlot House is our 1st choice. Mike also recommended a new winery for our drive home, which was charming.

Room Tip: All 3 suites are very good so choose based on sleeping needs - Queen vs King. Twin if two travelling...

My husband and I recently stayed at the Merlot House for the weekend and we were extremely impressed. Shirley and Mike were welcoming and made us feel comfortable as soon as we walked in, showing us around and helping us get settled into our room. The house, rooms and decor of the Merlot House is charming and beautiful - there is a back patio/garden that we were also welcome to use which was another lovely aspect of this B&B. The breakfast included fresh fruit, scones, ham and cheese crepes, and belgium waffles with a cherry compote - all presented beautifully and tasting absolutely delicious. We stayed in the Chardonnay room which had a queen bed and a private bathroom. The bed and bath linens were high quality and the room was also equipped with a ceiling fan and fireplace. We truly hope to return to the Merlot House again! Thanks again to Shirley and Mike for a truly wonderful weekend.

We have been going to NOTL every year for the past 13 years, mainly for the great cycling. After a three day stay at Merlot House this week, we are happy to have found our new "go to" B&B for our yearly visit to NOTL! Outstanding in every way!

Merlot House reminded us of a delightful Paris boutique hotel where my husband and I stayed a few years ago. There is careful attention to every comfort .

The detailed review of June 24 (Toronto Travelbuff) was excellent in expressing our thoughts of this B & B and its gracious hosts, Shirley and Mike McBride. They truly enjoy people and sharing their lovely home.

We had needlessly been a little concerned when the only room available was the smaller of the three, the Chardonnay, with a queen bed. As we are accustom to a king, we wondered about our quality of sleep. With the comfortable mattress and the quality bedding we had a good rest. Unlike the Paris hotel, we appreciated the sheet provided along with the duvet.

As we had a late lunch before arrival, we only wanted a light snack before the evening performance at the Theatre. Shirley's recommendation of the outdoor patio of the local golf course was a good one. We liked the casual atmosphere as we sat overlooking the water and shaded by a large tree.

We will plan a longer visit next time to Merlot House and this area.

My daughter and I just returned from an overnight stay at Merlot House after seeing a Shaw Festival matinee. We have visited Niagara on the Lake for more than fifteen years and stayed in many bed and breakfasts. Merlot House is at the top of the scale! Host Shirley McBride was welcoming, professional and thoughtful. She offered duvets for our air-conditioned bedroom but the temperature was perfect. The rooms were beautifully decorated consistent with the architecture of the house. The furniture, artwork and prints reflected the McBride family's extensive traveling abroad. We appreciated the comfortable twin beds and high quality linens and towels. The mandarin oranges in our room and Keurig coffee and teas in the guest pantry were a lovely surprise. Our breakfast included fresh fruit, yoghurt, home baked banana-apple-nut bread, French toast with orange butter, maple syrup and baked ham slices. Everything was delicious and attractively presented including an edible flower. We hope to return next summer to stay again at Merlot House. Many thanks, Shirley, for making our stay memorable!

Room Tip: Dinner at Ravine Winery was good but not outstanding. Next time we will try Ginger Restaurant as Shi...
