“Bad - for the diet!!”

Willow Cakes & Pastries
Certificate of Excellence
Description: It is hard to say what pastry chef and proprietor Catherine O'Donnell is best known for - her incredible breads, decadent cakes, or her decidedly delicious pastries. Unquestionably, they are all worth the trip to Willow Cakes and Pastries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, christened "a place of pilgrimage for anyone with a sweet tooth" by James Chatto in the LCBO's Food and Drink magazine. Stepping into Willow Cakes and Pastries feels like a trip to the Continent and a European patisserie. Customers experience the feel of both a local bakery and an exquisite boutique - surveying the breads, chocolates, cakes and tarts in gleaming display cases, watching Catherine and her team at work through the viewing window or lingering over coffee and a newspaper. Whether you are in the market for a show stopping wedding cake, a dessert to impress your guests, a gift to be savoured, or a coffee and quick bite on the go, Willow Cakes and Pastries is truly a "must stop shop" in Niagara.

We stopped in here shortly after arriving in NOTL when we were wandering around the neighbourhood looking for places to dine at night and WOW - this place is amazing. The selection of cakes and pastries was incerdible and not only did they look good they were heavenly to eat. It looks like the baking is done on the premises because you could see through to the kitchen/prep area from where we were sitting. The cakes, topped off with an excellent coffee were the perfect welcome to NOTL after a longish drive from the USA. Wish Willow Cakes and Pastires was in my home town - but then again maybe not. Too irresistible and definitely very bad for the diet.

Becareful ordering a wedding cake. I ordered a wedding cake well in advance a simple three tier cake. I picked a beautiful colour of icing as white was not one of my colours. She even had a picture of the cake exactly in her "album". So i thought how could she screw this up. Well my wedding was August 13th,2011 and to my surprise there was a white crumb coated three tiered cake on the table. Not even Finish icing on it... i was soooo upset. i do not even have a picture of it to put in my album. It became the joke of the evening... Oh yah she has to have the final payment before the wedding...that is so she can deliever what ever she has done on that day.... BEWARE SHE CALLS HERSELF A PROFFESIONAL BUT A PROFESSIONAL WOULD NOT DELIVER AN UNFINISHED WEDDING CAKE ON A WEDDING DAY! thats one memory that will last a life time.

We visited this bakery because it was close to our hotel. The pastries were excellent! My sticky bun with pecans was sweet and crunchy. The croissants were very good (but not as flaky as ones from France). The cakes were great--the chocolate pecan tart was scrumptious, the shortcake cookies were full of buttery and sugar and crunch. Yummmm.

Note: this is a bakery with great bakery selections, but not a full lunch and dinner place.

My wife and I were biking from Niagara on the Lake to Niagara Falls. We stopped here and picked up two sandwiches and two cookies for our picnic lunch. The sandwiches were good and the cookies were excellent!
