There are several trails along the gorge to hike and explore. Wear good hiking shoes or boots. Bring water and snacks. There is also lots of picnic areas. It is a fun site to visit. The small shop near the trail has some interesting historical and geological items and trivia.

This was a really well marked trail. A helpful guide at the visitor centre recommended a route for us. The trails were easy to follow. There were several places that you could get really close to the river and watch the jet boats cross the rapids on their way up to the whirlpools. As it was a very hot day we were glad of the shade provided by the forest.

If you're looking for a break from the chaos and crowds around the falls, go take a hike! The Niagara Glen Nature Area has great trails that are well marked and you can choose your difficulty. Stop by the Information Center for the trail map first. It is the perfect guide if you are on your own. We went late in the day and I was initially nervous about getting lost as it would be dark soon. Once I saw how well marked the trails were and how specific the trail map was, I was able to relax and enjoy the quiet nature and the stunning scenery. There are many interconnecting trails so you can be out there for a quick hike down or a long meander along the river. Best of all it's FREE!

With all the wondrous attractions of Niagara Falls, the not-as-well-known hiking trails at Niagara Glen are truly amazing! One trail goes to the whirlpool area; others wind up along the boulder-laden banks of the Niagara River.

There is a nature centre/gift shop, and bathrooms are near the roadside. There are also parking meters.

But once you descend the 4 flights of stairs to the trails, you are in a beautiful nature setting. A few caveats:

1. Only those healthy/physically adept should take these hikes.
2. Be very careful with your footing. In some areas, a wrong step could lead to a fall down a steep ravine. Sturdy footwear (e.g., hiking shoes) is advised.
3. Do not text while hiking. You need to be attentive to the trail and your footing.
4. Depending on where you wish to go, some climbing might be needed.
5. Much of the hike is downhill. Much is gravelly. Watch your step!

Typically, hiking at a regular pace will take 20-30 minutes to reach the banks of the river. There you will find a bounty of beautiful boulders. Feel free to sit on the boulders and enjoy the view, which to me, is a slice of heaven.

First and foremost, be careful. Then enjoy!
